Study of Water-Energy Nexus in India Ph.D. Scholarship TERI University is currently seeking a bright Ph.D candidate to work on Study of Water-Energy Nexus in india India is an emerging economy which has seen unprecedented levels of economic expansion post- Independence. With the population of over 1.2 billon and the GDP growing at a rate of 8% per annum, demand for two key resources, water and energy, are rapidly increasing. India s energy consumption has been increasing at one of the fastest rates in the world. At present, the total water demand of the country is 694 BCM, meeting which is already a challenge, given that the total accessible and reliable water supply is 744 BCM. As the economy develops further, both these resource are likely to face increased stress. Given the importance of both energy and water security in development, it is very important to find out that the crucial nexus that exists between water and energy. Water is needed for energy generation and energy is required for water extraction, treatment and supply. How this nexus evolve in the years to come, and what opportunities exists for ensuring sustainable growth along both these dimensions together merits in-depth analysis. This is what we are exploring under this study. The study area focuses on developing a framework for analyzing the water-energy nexus in the Indian context, examining prospective options for energy and water saving across sectors and analyzing possible future water-energy scenarios in the long term. Ph.D. Candidates is expected to contribute to specific components of the study in a multidisciplinary environment. The scholars wsill also have an opportunity to get engaged as teaching assistants in their related subjects during their tenure at TERI University. 2 Stipend A stipend of Rs. 20,800 would be available for one year (as per TU rule), and may be extended to subsequent years subject to project extension. City Level Modeling for Sustainable Mobility TERI University is currently seeking a bright Ph.D. candidate to work on a study entitled City Level Modeling for Sustainable Mobility Transport sector is the second largest energy consuming sector in India. Mobility needs are increasing at a very fast pace in Indian cities due to increased population concentrated in cities due to natural growth as well as migration from smaller towns and villages, increasing urbanization. There is a need to study the transport challenges, trend over the years, the possible policy and technology options and solutions at spatially disaggregated levels or for different socio-economic groups of people. It is important to understand the specific reasons influencing the choice of modes and usage pattern at the city level, analyze the impact of attitude, lifestyle etc. on an individual s travel behavior, examine the various alternatives and consider a holistic approach towards transportation planning at the city level with the objective of being able to bring about change through appropriate policies in order to provide directed and workable solutions towards sustainable urban transport that address energy security at the national level and congestion and pollution at the local level. The study would involve examining indicators, designing analytical frameworks, and developing models that help examine spatially, transportation issues at the city level and design appropriate strategies for reducing energy consumption and addressing other issues related to sustainable urban mobility. Project will be carried out by a multidisciplinary team. Scaling up the Use of Clean Technologies for Poor Households TERI University is currently seeking a bright Ph.D. candidate to work on a study entitled Scaling up the Use of Clean Cooking Technologies for Poor Households TERI has launched an improved biomass cook stove programme targeted at rural households of India and Africa. TERI aims to bring the stakeholders, namely stove developers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, post sales service network, and NGOs, on one platform under this initiative to seed a stove market that sustains and grows even after the programme ends. To this end, multiple innovative business models will be implemented to assess the best way forward. The candidate should be able to do an extensive literature review of the existing stove business models, document existing business models (both under this programme and otherwise), design a business model based on review of the experiences and then takes leadership in its pilot scale implementation. In other words, the field work of the student will entail assessment of the ground

4 situation prior to business model finalization and then actual implementation of the model by guiding and facilitating the concerned stakeholders. The student is expected to bring in academic rigor to the entire process by using existing theoretical models as base for model development and detailed data collection and analysis throughout the process of planning and implementation. As an output the student should be able to publish a case study of the implementation and one research article on stove business models in international peer reviewed journals. The scholars will also have an opportunity to get engaged as teaching assistants in their related subjects during their tenure at TERI University Eligibility The candidate should hold Masters degree in Social science or related discipline. The candidate should be willing to extensively travel and stay in rural areas for field work. Candidates familiar with rural areas and with publication record will be preferred.
