5 16.1: Human Pop Growth & Natural Resources Key concept: As the human population grows, the demand for Earth s resources increases Introduction Human Population The human population grew slowly for thousands of years until the industrial and scientific revolutions of the 1800s Human Population Improvements in food production and hygiene helped lead to rapid, exponential growth Human Population Is this growth sustainable? World Population Growth 5

6 2/27/16 World Population World Population Technology & Human Population Two technological advancements that have contributed to population growth: Gas-powered farm equipment Technology & Human Population Two technological advancements that have contributed to population growth: Types of Resources Resource Type: nonrenewable Description: used faster than it forms; oil, coal Medical advancements: antibiotics and antiseptics 6

7 Types of Resources Resource Type: renewable Description: cannot be used up or can replenish itself; sunlight, wind, water Types of Resources Currently, some renewable resources, such as water, are at risk for becoming nonrenewable in the future due to human population growth Ecological Footprint Humans need natural resources to survive, but how do we use compared to how much land is available on Earth? Ecological Footprint Definition: Amount of land necessary to sustain the use of natural resources (food, water, energy, etc) Ecological Footprint Size Depends on: Amount and efficiency of resource use & the amount and toxicity of waste produced Pair-Share-Respond 1. How did human populacon growth change amer the Industrial RevoluCon? 2. What two technological developments helped contribute to this change? 3. DisCnguish between nonrenewable and renewable resources 4. Provide an example of each type of resource 5. Define the term ecological footprint 7
