HUKUNA Used Cooking Oil Recycling program for schools Recycling Program 1

COMPANY INTRODUCTION We at Hukuna strive to be a beacon of proactive, environmental responsibility that will awaken the world to what is possible when people take their future into their own hands and take action to save their environment. Hukuna Projects and Services have been working in the field of environmental awareness and the protection of our planet. We are able to achieve some goals which encourage us to go further in our work. 2

Our Aim We are launching a new project to get children and their parents involved in recycling waste cooking oil. The intention is to have drop off points at the school the child/children is attending. As a nation we re good at recycling old cooking oil from restaurants and take away outlets, but really rubbish at recycling cooking oil at our homes. But with the help of schoolchildren, we re going to change that! 3

The Problem If grease and used cooking oil is flushed down the drains it clogs up and causes blockages that are difficult and expensive to fix. The fact that used cooking oil gets poured down the drain is often due to lack of information and is an easy way of discarding left over used cooking oil. Due to a number of factors, like lower water temperatures, less turbulence in the pipes and chemical reactions, fats oil and grease (FOG) hardens when it reaches the sewer system and builds up on the insides of the pipes. The compound (or soap compound ) that builds up inside the pipes leads to an ever decreasing diameter for the water to flow by; until it finally completely blocks the passage. The blockages, which are time consuming and expensive to clear, can lead to flooding and corrosion of the pipes. Accumulated FOG also causes bad smells which attracts rats. 5 The Problem Waste oil, if dumped into the drains, will block the pipes. When this oil gets in touch with open water, it spreads over the surface and prevents oxygenation, suffocating many forms of aquatic life. A slight amount of waste oil is enough to pollute litres of water. Picture of a dead fish that suffocated 5

The Problem Waste oil if dumped into your general waste bin, will end up at landfill sites that is not equipped to handle these waste streams and will end up contaminating the soil and also preventing oxygenation, suffocating many forms of life. 6

Solution The Recycling program is a concept aimed at informing households about how used cooking oil can be taken care of and turned into a resource, instead of ending up in the drains where it causes a lot of damage. Here at Hukuna Projects and Services you will find everything you need for a successful awareness-campaign for used cooking oil. 7

Solution How can we help. We want to make your job a little easier. If you want to solve the problem that used cooking oil causes when poured down the drain and instead do something useful with the oil, you have come to the right place. We have most things you will need to create a behavioural change regarding disposal of used cooking oil and in that way avoid it ending up in the sewer system. In short, our goal is to be a one-stop-shop for recycling and collection of used cooking oil from households. In times when resources are scarce and consciousness about recycling has increased on a general level, the recycling of used cooking oil makes so much sense. With our system, we keep used cooking oil away from the sewer systems and we aim to make something useful like biogas or biodiesel, out of it instead. The recycling and collection of used cooking oil is easy and a step towards a more sustainable society. 8

Solution What can we do for you We act as a speaking partner and support you in the process of developing a strategy for the collection of used cooking oil, based on your needs and conditions We share our knowledge and experience We help you avoid common pitfalls in the planning of awareness campaigns and collection schemes We provide you with all the tools you need for a successful awareness campaign, electronic information material and Containers for collection 9

Solution What do the Children Get out of it. The children get the opportunity to learn in a practical, fun way about waste, energy, recycling and climate change and win prizes for good teamwork. Through recycling the oil they make a valuable difference to society and should be proud of their contribution. 10

Solution What does the School get out of it The school will be able to show practical examples of effective teaching of various parts of the national curriculum which also fit in very well with the requirements of Eco-Schools. We will also pay the school R1 per litre for the oil we collect. 11

2500 Gauteng Schools We will pay R1 per litter collected with pupils per school Each brings 1 litter That is a total of Litter saved per month in Gauteng. That is liters of oil a month just from one school 12

Solution What do we get out of it We get to work with children collecting more oil for our Bio fuel and teaching them about waste, energy, recycling and climate change 13

Solution How It Works Accessible collection points will be identified and containers can be placed at already existing collection points for recycling. We go to the school and place a special on the school premises where the oil will be poured into The children collect as much oil as they can. We will come around regularly to collect it. We can also run competitions for different classes, year groups and even schools, with prizes for groups that collect the most oil over a set period, to encourage the children to take part. 14
