2 Remember them good ol days? 3 StreamStats is: What is StreamStats? A Web-based GIS application created by the USGS to provide users with an assortment of analytical tools useful for water-resources planning and management. Initially developed for NC in cooperation with NCDOT Hydraulics Unit (initial release to public in June 2012) StreamStats does: Makes the process of computing basin characteristics and streamflow statistics (flood-frequency statistics) for ungaged locations faster, accurate, and consistent. 4 2

3 With StreamStats You Can: Easily obtain streamflow statistics, basin characteristics, and descriptive information for USGS data-collection stations User-selected ungaged locations Delineate the drainage-basin boundary Summarize basin characteristics Estimate streamflow statistics (flood-frequency for NC) 6 Updates to interface Initial release June 2012 (Version 2 interface) Version 3 interface released July 2015 Beta Version 4 release very, very imminent Fully-functional Version 4 a few weeks after that 7 3

4 North Carolina StreamStats Currently uses: 30 ft pixel Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) based on LiDAR Combination of local resolution streams (NC Stream Mapping) high resolution National Hydrography Datasets (NHD). NHD is a comprehensive set of digital spatial data representing the surface water of the United States using common features such as lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, canals, and oceans. 9 So just how accurate are those stream lines? The stream lines a combination of: local resolution streams (~ 1:4,800) for 19 counties in western NC, and 1:24,000 scale National Hydrography Datasets (NHD) Digitized NHD streams reflect accuracy of the paper topographical quad maps Seamed at the boundaries between 2 regions 11 4

24 No low-flow statistics? Only rural and urban/small rural flood frequency estimates available in current application Next area of focus needs to be implementation of low-flow statistics and (eventually) updated low-flow techniques(?) USGS Office of Surface Water requires that all streamflow statistics and regression techniques be cited to a publication before inclusion in a StreamStats application. Current low-flow techniques for NC (Giese and Mason, 1993) are based on data through 1987 water year (25 years ago ) Low-flow statistics have decreased for many gaging stations as a result of recent drought conditions (particularly, 2002 and 2007) 51 Questions concerns complaints?
