2 The Concept of the EL Those capable of developing comprehensive strategies which integrate the environment, the economy and society. Environmental experts (pollution prevention, environmental assessment, protection and management). Those whose primary skill is elsewhere but who have the ability to integrate their own area of expertise with environmental and sustainability objectives.

4 Environmental Leader Program Strategic Energy and Resource Management and Sustainable Solutions (SERMSS) philosophy: Global environmental problems are most crucial international issues and have been increasing while, at the same time, the world economy improves. Especially in Asia and Africa, the development and finding of renewable energy and resources are urgent issues. We established this program with the aim of fostering international and environmental leaders who have advanced expertise in the field of energy and resources, management skills, practical ability, and comprehensive ability for specific policy proposals and for planning international business strategies for the next generation. Target leaders: all Masters and Doctorate postgraduate students in the Graduate School of Environmental Sciences; covering a range of science, engineering and humanities disciplines. A range of nationalities and cultures. Potential outcome: equip leading researchers to apply their skills in future jobs to environmental sustainability in Japan and rest of World.

7 Qualifications Provided Master Course: Two-year professional education or advanced practical education program -Master s degree and Certificate of International Environmental Leadership -Environmental Leader Master Certificate (ELMC) -Excellent students will be certified as Professional Master for Sustainable Environment(PMSE). Doctor Course: Advanced and professional research and internship (both required) -Doctor s degree and Certificate of International Environmental Leadership -Environmental Leader Doctor Certificate (ELDC) -Excellent students will be certified as Professional Director for Sustainable Environment (PDSE). Basic Environmental Leader Training Course -Development of comprehensive ability including international perspective, practical ability, management ability and strategic planning skills - Environmental Leader Training Certificate -Excellent students will be certified as Professional Master/Leader for Sustainable Environment.

9 ELTP Content Principles of Sustainability- origin of the sustainability issue, detailed analysis of current challenges and the system failures which lead to unsustainable development Environmental Leader Training seminars- developing interpersonal and intercultural skills on the international stage Solution Creation- processes of creating new technologies strategies and technologies Environmental management and sustainable businessapproaches in companies to developing more sustainable approaches Energy and resources- understanding the current energy and resource situation and potential strategies for a sustainable future Water and urban environment- focus on the supply, management and treatment of water in cities Fieldwork- visits to environmentally-focused companies and local administrations Internships- periods of internships internationally suited to the student s own field of expertise SERMSS Environmental Leadership Program Tohoku University

10 Aims and approach of the Sustainability Course AIMS Provide Strong motivation a determined mind with an understanding of the complexity and diversity in promoting sustainable development Specialism Covers the fields in the GSES (from materials to biological processes) PLUS knowledge of the link between the speciality and environmental issues Leadership Strengthen personal skills on analysis, communication and international outlook APPROACH To provide motivation, detailed understanding is necessary: Understand sustainability issues, the evolution of the sustainability debate and concepts. Identify viewpoints on sustainability held by business and other stakeholder groups. debate sustainability issues with colleagues from other jobs and organisations.

These studies were also helpful to my research.. with the wide vision this program supplied, I have a new way of thinking about my research field. Thanks to this program, I have realized the responsibility of being an environmental leader, and because my native China is a developing country, such study and training have great significance to our work of 15 environmental protection.
