5 w District Energy a way to counter climate changes DISTRICT HEATING Central production of hot water. Distributed to homes, offices, business premises etc. and cooled water returned. Indoor heating and cooling account by far for the biggest part of energy consumption in private households. Increasing energy efficiency for heating and cooling will pay back directly by reducing the impact on our environment and reducing CO 2 emissions. District energy, which includes both district heating and district cooling, is a known and developed solution to increase energy efficiency. A sustainable choice for the future, cost effective and at the same time securing a high level of comfort. District energy systems distribute hot or cold water from a central production and after heating or cooling the individual premises the water is returned. The LOGSTOR pipe systems with peerless insulation properties ensure flawless distribution and low costs of operation as the energy loss during distribution is limited to a minimum. District energy can use any source of energy and is flexible for changes in sources over time. All kinds of renewables, surplus heat from combined heat and power production (CHP), surplus heat from industries, fossil fuels and electricity can be used. The district energy concept enables storage of energy, and when power production from windmills exceeds the actual demand, district energy can then use this surplus in an intelligent way. In the process towards fossil free societies where we go from fossil fuels to renewable and sustainable energy sources, it is vital that the infrastructure for transmission and distribution of heating and cooling are independent of the energy source. Where district heating is combined with district cooling, it is possible to achieve mutual energy benefits when surplus heat can be converted into cooling during hot summer months. Thereby electrically driven cooling is also replaced, and the huge load on the electricity grid in the summertime is reduced and so is the need for additional power plants. 6 The right investment pays off In relation to minimum 30 years of operation, the initial investment in district heating and cooling systems counts for the smaller part of the total costs. Depending on operational parameters and choice of type of pipe and insulation series the initial investment might account for only 30 %, whereas the operational expenses in form of heat loss, electricity for pumping and maintenance account for up to 70 %. 80 the plant needs a network of pipe systems. 7 w Oil & Gas Every year, the world is consuming more energy. In spite of strong growth in renewable sources, fossil fuels are still ruling the vast majority of the energy market. Steel pipelines are therefore used offshore and onshore all over the world for transport of natural gas, crude oil, petrochemical and petroleum products at high pressures and over long distances. The chemical composition of these gases, fluids, oils and the environments often extreme - from which they are extracted present tougher challenges, necessitating highperforming insulation coatings. LOGSTOR s contribution to the O&G industry is on project basis, providing customized insulated pipe systems with best-in-class properties to transport products at temperatures rating down to minus 210 C and up to plus 250 C. The LOGSTOR CryoPipe is a thermal insulation system for cryogenic pipelines to maintain a constant operating temperature down to minus 210 C.
