1 American Wind Energy Association U.S. Wind Industry Third Quarter 2014 Market Report A product of AWEA Data Services Released October 20, 2014 The American wind energy industry installed 1,254 megawatts (MW) during the first three quarters of 2014, more than the industry installed during the entire year in The U.S. now has an installed wind capacity of 62,300 MW. There are over 13,600 MW of wind currently under construction.

3 Key Takeaways 2014 Wind Project Installations During the third quarter of 2014, the U.S. wind industry installed 233 turbines, totaling 419 megawatts (MW). These turbines were installed across 5 projects in 4 different states. The most wind capacity was installed in Texas (289 MW), followed by Nebraska (77 MW), Michigan (51 MW) and California (2 MW). Through the third quarter the U.S. wind industry has installed 1,254 MW and 711 turbines. This is more than the wind industry installed during all of 2013, but still lags behind installation numbers from recent years. There are now 62,300 MW of installed wind capacity in the United States and over 46,400 wind turbines. Wind Power Construction Activity At the end of September 2014, wind project developers reported more than 13,600 MW of wind capacity under construction across 105 projects in 21 states. The majority of wind construction activity continues to be focused within Texas (>7,600 MW). There are over 1,170 MW under construction in Oklahoma, over 1,050 MW under construction in Iowa, over 780 MW under construction in North Dakota, and over 670 MW under construction in Kansas. Wind Power Purchase Agreements and Corporate Purchasers Utilities continue signing power purchase agreements (PPAs) for wind power into Over 1,600 MW of new wind PPAs have been announced during 2014, building on the roughly 8,000 MW of power purchase agreements signed during Among the 9,600 MW of PPAs announced during , approximately 3,700 MW have not yet started physical construction. Corporate purchasers continue to invest in wind energy. Yahoo! and Walmart have signed PPAs for projects in Kansas and Texas respectively, joining investments from Google, Microsoft, Ikea and Mars earlier in American Wind Energy Association U.S. Wind Industry Third Quarter 2014 Market Report AWEA Public Version 3

This decrease is the result of projects coming online, but also the removal of several projects. The third quarter did bring a slow down in new construction starts with less than 400 MW starting physical construction. These projects are presumed to have taken steps to qualify for the PTC through safe harbor. This record-breaking under construction activity is the result of the 2013 PTC extension and historically low wind prices. Approximately 20% of the under construction activity is located in the Midwest, from North and South Dakota to Iowa, Illinois and Michigan. The Plains states, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska are benefiting from 14% of the under construction activity. Nearly 5% of wind project construction activity is concentrated in the Mountain West region, which AWEA defines as Arizona and New Mexico, north to Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.
