Industrial Sector Development: Leather Supported the development of Na'onal Ins'tute of Leather Technology and several other training ins'tutes Over 1000 students have been trained in leather garments, gloves, shoes and other goods manufacturing, facilita'ng the development of the leather products industry resul'ng in over 1 billion USD annual exports Suppor'ng the ini'a've of serng up the Kasur and Sialkot Tannery Zones. The ac'vity relocates all tanneries in the vicinity into one specific zone with all required facili'es 6

Sector Development: Fans, Cutlery, Surgicals, Protec've Gear Produc'vity improved from 30% to 120%, quality improved from 43% to 81%, resul'ng in improved quality and opening of new markets like EU One protec've gear company enhanced 30% export while other has won an interna'onal tender worth US$ 100,000 and has CE marked 6 other gloves models. A poten'al savings of PKR 225 Million iden'fied in fan sector. 250 Personnel trained on good house keeping and Process Control Prac'ces in four sectors. 11 gloves models and 17 electric fan models achieved CE marking Strengthened the capacity of public ins'tu'ons relevant to the different sectors to facilitate the improvements in produc'vity and establishment of compliance of products such as PCSIR and Na'onal Produc'vity Organiza'on (NPO), NUST Islamabad and UET Lahore Facilita'ng the introduc'on of new and improved polishing technology in cutlery sector 7

8 2. UNIDO s Interven'on for Trade Capacity Development Assisted several supply chains: fisheries and hor'culture (mango & kinnow) by improving export quality, value addi'on and compliance with interna'onal market 8

9 2. Impact: Fisheries IMPACT Fisheries Facilitated the development of the food safety legisla'on and cer'fied labs, fulfilling requirements for resump'on of EU export in March 2013 acer 7 year ban. Exported 160 consignments worth $16 million to UK, Spain, Italy etc. with Zero rejec'on. Developed Code of Prac'ces (COPs) for small fishing boat holders in Pakistan 35 Master Trainers (MTs) trained and subsequently 1,960 fishermen trained in Baluchistan coastal area by the trained MTs 9

Impact: Hor'culture (Mango and Kinnow) IMPACT Hor.culture Reduced cost of Inputs 9-15%, increased yield up to 25% per hectare, Reduced wastages up to 20 % and improved quality Agriculture Support Fund disseminated COPs for Kinnow and Mangoes developed by UNIDO Pakistani Farmers and exporters now able to direct link to high-end markets : in Europe and SE- Asia 10

11 3. UNIDO s Interven'ons for Investment Promo'on 1. In collaboration with the Italian Government and SMEDA set-up the Investment Promotion Unit (IPU) in Lahore with emphasis on boosting Italian investment in Pakistan 2. Conducted feasibility study for establishing a Credit Guarantee Scheme for SMEs 3. Facilitated delegations of Pakistani SMEs to attend exhibition in Italy for the purpose of business match-making in dairy processing, olive oil processing, fruit processing and renewable energy 4. Facilitated two farms in olive oil extraction using the world s largest olive oil extraction machinery manufacturer (Pieralisi, Italy) 5. Facilitating local SMEs in developing business proposals for acquiring Italian technology 11

12 4. UNIDO s Interven'ons for Environment / Clean Produc'on 1. Established first ever combined effluent treatment plant (CEPT) for tanneries at Kasur of 13000M 3 /day capacity (Second half of 1999) 2. Fat extraction unit to process hides and skins fleshings also established at Kasur 3. Establishing a similar CEPT at the Sialkot Tannery Zone (STZ) 4. Promoting other clean production techniques at the STZ, contributing to improved climate resilience 5. Conducting planning for improving the environmental canvas of Korangi Industrial Area sector 7-A 6. Eco-industrial mapping to promote eco-industrialization and climate resilient industrial development with reduced vulnerabilities of surrounding settlements in selected industrial areas of Karachi & KPK 12

13 5. UNIDO s Interven'ons in Energy 1. Promotion of renewable energy technologies such as solar energy, biomass gasification and efficient biomass combustion in the industrial sector 2. Facilitating solar and biomass demonstration units in industries (5 units, approx. 15 MW total) 3. Promoting installation and technology transfer of ultra low-head micro hydropower for rural cottage industry (25 installations of kw each planned) 13

Supporting energy efficiency in industry by facilitating: a) Energy audits in 75 factories, b) ISO Energy Management System implementation in 50 factories c) Carrying out energy system optimizations in 25 factories d) Training of over 120 energy consultants, industry professionals and technology providers 14

15 6. UNIDO s Interven'ons for Promo'ng Entrepreneurship 1. Promoting clean energy technology innovations and entrepreneurship in Pakistan through the Global Cleantech innovation Programme (GCIP) for SMEs and start-ups 2. Connecting innovators with investors 3. Supporting the establishment of a venture capital fund 4. Setting up local sector specific industry award (similar to Cleantech) GREEN BUILDING 15

16 6. Successful Entrepreneur from GCIP 1. Power Monitoring & Energy Efficiency Device Na.onal Winner GCIP 2015: Project Roshni Allows home and industrial users to monitor power consump'on and spot inefficiencies. Achievement: Signing contract with CocaCola Interna.onal during GCIP Global Forum. 16

17 Future Outlook UNIDO remains committed to extend technical support in Pakistan for inclusive and sustainable industrial development and achievement of SDG-9 SME sectors with high potential for social and economic impact such as agrofood sector remain high on UNIDO s priority UNIDO sees itself continuing to execute projects supporting industry in the field of energy, environment and climate change in Pakistan 17
