Welcome to the World of GAIA Mother Earth GAIA originates from Greek mythology. GAIA is goddess and Mother of Earth. She was born from an eggshell and the nutrition from the eggshell contributed to the Earth s vegetation. 1

GAIA Biodolomer GAIA and the eggshell An eggshell consists of 95% calcium carbonate and 5% protein. The quest to simulate one of natures greatest packaging material led us to develop our own biomaterial, Biodolomer 2

Ake Rosén Founder of GAIA Ake Rosén has spent 40 years developing mineral filled bioplastics with over 50 patents to his name. Ake started several international companies, incl. RKW Sweden AB and Ecolean AB. Ake was technical advisor at Tetra Pak for many years. 3

Advantages with Biodolomer In certain cases Biodolomer can provide economical benefits in the form of: Decreased goods thickness for injection moulding and thinner film for producing bags reduces use of material Up to 30% increased productivity Considerably lowered CO 2 emissions Improved durability for packaged food without gas barrier Biodolomer can be used in existing machines Water-soluble printing colours, no need for Corona treatment 20

Biodolomer vs Paper 1 (2) 1. Improved fill rate compared to paper bags since no need for rolling when sealing 2. Does not leak no need for double bags 3. Better durability than paper bag 4. More household waste sorted 5. Does not require as much space as paper bag when stored in bins 6. Sealable 7. Less smell in kitchen and from waste bins 8. No maggots and insects in waste bins 9. No freezing in the bin for villa communities using their own waste bins 10. Waste bin can hold more waste since the bags mould smoothly to each other The result is that the garbage can be packed more efficiently, i.e. fewer bins and fewer containers in circulation 21

Biodolomer vs Paper 2 (2) 11. Fewer containers means less transportation 12. Less spills on the floor in the garbage room 13. Less need for cleaning and washing waste bins, containers and trucks 14. Garbage truck platforms become less dirty leading to reduced corrosion 15. Much less permeation compared with a paper bag, i.e a significant reduction of bacteria can be transmitted to the person/s handling the bag 16. Easier for elderly to handle the food waste 17. Fully degradable and compostable according to European standard EN Low total environmental impact and very competitive Life Cycle Analysis, LCA 19. Up to 50% increased biogas potential 22

Propagation of the bacteria within 5 days on the outside of waste bags Microbiological enumerations unit [Bacteria/cm 2 ] Biodolomer Pouch forms 550,000 times less bacteria than paper bags Bacteria Number of bacterian in the palm of a hand number of bacteria in the palm of a hand Paper bag (apprx bacteria / cm 2 ) Low water resistance of paper bags leads to more transmission of bacteria from inside of the bag to the outside surface Plastic bag (apprx bacteria / cm 2 ) Due to higher permeability, plastic bags have 10 times higher fungal and bacterial formation than Biodolomer pouches Paper bag Plastic bag Biodolomer Pouch Paper bag Plastic bag Biodolomer pouch Biodolomer pouch (apprx. 125 bacteria / cm 2 ) The paper bag: The high permeability of the paper bag leads to massive fungal and bacterial formation mainly in the bottom of the bag. Water resistant Biodolomer pouches show low bacterial transmission, thus contributing to less contamination Biodolomer Pouch: The bags excellent wet strength gives low microbial contamination and contributes to the cleanliness of both the vessel, the kitchen, and the compost. 25 No obstacles in waste handling We (JTI) see no obstacles to replacing existing [plastic] carrying cases and fruit bags with starch-based bags from the aspect that they should not work within the current collection of waste or treatment in waste facilities for recycling, combustion or biogas. In these municipalities, the waste is handled in a satisfactory manner today, and starch bags are not expected to adversely affect the management chain. Replacing today s carrying bags and fruitbags, made from PE, provides an improvement with regards to littering in the cases where it occurs. Abandoned bags - or pieces of bags - decompose and do not stay around in the environment for long. /Ulf Norberg - Senior Project leader JTI/RISE 25

Is mixing with regular plastic while recycling a problem? According to tests carried out by the Laboratory Foundation of the Polytechnic Institute of Milan and Proplast Laboratories in Tortona, it has been proved possible to recycle starch-based bio bags along with conventional plastic bags in a concentration up to 10 percent as raw material for new bags. By comparison, a 2 percent concentration of PET eliminates recycled PE film blowing of PE. European Bioplastics Meta Study: The Behaviour of Bioplastic Films in Mechanical Recycling Streams, April

Degradable or degradable? "Oxo-biodegradable" plastic is not completely degradable, but instead is fragmented into microparticle plastics. It is therefore misleading to refer to such material as biodegradable. 27

Price vs Performance Biodolomer has a higher density than plastic and green PE; but: Material usage per product decreases, as the goods thickness can be reduced with retained product performance Biodolymer offers longer shelf life for packaged foods without gas barrier materials, which simplifies the packaging process Environmentally friendly solutions reflects positively on the brand Experience from customers shows that merchants can increase their margins from consumers, as customers are willing to pay more for environmentally friendly alternatives 28

EU environmental guidelines Reduced CO 2 emissions Use as little as possible of the Earth's resources Social benefits by creating new sustainable jobs Some countries have already implemented measures against plastic bags (France, UK, Belgium and counting) 29

Biodolomer for Life! A close cooperation between future-minded partners 30

A sustainable future? In 2015, 322 million tons of plastic was produced world wide. 8 million tons of plastic leak into the ocean every year. By % of all sea birds will have ingested plastic. Sources: The New Plastics Economy: Rethinking the future of plastics, The Ellen MacArthur Foundation 2016 Threat of plastic pollution to seabirds is global, pervasive, and increasing, PNAS, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, vol 112 no

A sustainable future? Marine biologists were deeply disturbed by what they found in the animals stomachs. Stomachs full of plastic. 32

A sustainable future! It is now up to us if we want to create a new world or not. 33
