OFAEnR Conférence sur le rôle du biométhane dans la transition énergétique en France et en Allemagne MEDDE, la Défense 26 février 2015 Frédéric PIERRE Lyonnaise des Eaux

Overview 1 Origins of the project 2 Partnership project context 3 Project energy context 4 Innovative aspects of the project 5 Industrial project 6 Uses of biomethane

Origins of the project A project driven by Lyonnaise des Eaux et Degrémont Services 2009/2010 : Définition of the study program in response to the call for tenders for the operation of Strasbourg s WWTP 2011 : Achievement of biogas purification and biomethane injection feasibility studies 2012 : Obtaining financial support from EU 2013 : Technology selection, creation of a joint-venture dedicated to the project

Partnership project context partners with converging stakes and interests Réseau GDS Réseau GDS wants to develop a biomethane injection route on its distribution network to : Support the development of natural gas in energy efficient solutions and environmentally friendly Contribute to the value production by the provision of a 100% green gas, biomethane, in circular economy logic

Partnership project context partners with converging stakes and interests Lyonnaise des Eaux / Degrémont Services Contribute to the optimization of Strasbourg's WWTP's energy model Develop its scientific and technical expertise Contribute to make the Suez Environnement subsidiaries unavoidable in these new professions

Partnership project context L Eurométropole de Strasbourg : a proactive Community for Sustainable Development Validation of the WWTP's operator's study program An ambition : to become the Community with the most "green" natural gas in France Validation of a "business model" guarantor of neutrality with the contract to operate the WWTP The availability of an industrial site of national importance

Partnership project context Wastewater Treatment Plant of Strasbourg-La Wantzenau 96% of domestic and industrial wastewater from Eurométropole 1 million population equivalent 4 th french plant Average wastewater s daily flow of m m 3 of biogas/year

Project energy context GWh WWTP energy balance Current situation 2 GWh Electricity 11 GWh CHP Digestion 5 GWh 6 GWh Furnace HE + flue gas treatment Atmospheric emissions Centrifugation DM 24% Sludge Heat Biogas/Biomethane Flue gas Electricity

Project energy context Maintain plant s auto-thermicity Target energy balance Produce and inject 16 GWhLHV/year of biomethane Means to achieve Reduce internal biogas consumption (furnace) Increase biogas production Implement a biogas upgrading unit

Project energy context GWh WWTP energy balance Future situation Biogénère 16 GWh Biomethane 18 GWh 1 GWh 0,3 GWh Electricity Digestion CHP Bucher press 5 GWh 1 GWh Furnace HE + flue gas treatment Atmospheric emissions DM > 24% Centrifugation Sludge Heat Biogas/Biomethane Flue gas Electricity

Innovative aspects of the project Innovation in terms Regulatory : participation in the development of the french regulatory framework, anticipation of the european normative developments Partnership : creation of a dedicated JV and a legal structure protecting the interests of the Parties and ensuring the sustainability of the industrial project Energy : 1 st french WWTP injecting biomethane, 1,6 MNm 3 /an equivalent to 5,000 low-energy housing or 1,500 biongv vehicles

Innovative aspects of the project Innovation in terms Valorisation of biogas components : study of the valorisation of coproduced bioco 2 Chemical and microbiological characterization of biomethane : definition of sampling and analysis protocols, detailed characterization Health : development of a health risk study related to the use of biomethane validated by a Scientific Council Environment : contribution to the reduction of 2/3 of GHG emissions of the WWTP

Industrial project Objective : conversion of biogas into biométhane BIOGAS BIOMETHANE 310 Nm 3 /h 186 Nm 3 /h 62% CH 4 > 97% CH 4 50 mg/nm3 VOC < 1 mg/nm3 VOC 400 mg/nm3 H 2 S < 1 mg/nm3 H 2 S

Le Projet Industriel

Uses of biométhane Objective : to contribute to energy independence of the territory Principle of local use validated by the partners and the Community BIOGENERE requires natural gas suppliers to undertake : - To sell all of Guarantees of Origin in the territory of the Eurométropole, provided that there are viable opportunities, - To provide an annual statement recounting the sale of Guarantees of Origin.

BIOVALSAN, a project to follow
