5 Our mission The mission of the APN is to enable investigations of changes in the Earth s life support systems and their implications for sustainable development in the Asia- Pacific region. 5

6 Our goals Supporting regional cooperation in global change research on issues particularly relevant to the Asia-Pacific region Strengthening appropriate interactions among scientists and policy-makers, and providing scientific input to policy decision-making and scientific knowledge to the public 6 Improving the scientific and technical capabilities of nations in the region, including the transfer of know-how and technology Cooperating with other global change networks and organisations * APN Third Strategic Plan:

8 ARCP Annual Calls for Under APN s Science Agenda, APN provides support to research that falls into the following four broad categories: Climate Change and Climate Variability; Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Land Use; Programme Changes in the Atmospheric, Terrestrial and Marine Domains Resources Utilization and Pathways 8

9 ARCP Annual Calls for Research projects funded under the ARCP programme are expected to: Improve regional and national networking of scientists in specialized fields of research, which will result in improved collaboration Provide outcomes that result in better understanding of the impacts of global change in the region and an increased awareness of these issues by policy-makers and resource managers Meet the needs for scientific information relevant to regional issues 9

10 CAPaBLE Scientific Capacity CAPaBLE Scientific Capacity Building/Enhancement for Sustainable in Developing Countries programme Launched in April 2003; An initiative to realize parts 107 to 114 of the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI) for the World Summit on Sustainable (WSSD); Registered as a WSSD Type II Partnership Initiative. 11 CAPaBLE Scientific Capacity Capacity building activities provide opportunities for young scientists to discuss relevant issues on global change and developed professional networking for future collaborative efforts CAPaBLE Scientific Capacity Workshops and meetings provide excellent fora for interactions between scientists and policy-makers as well as enhanced the knowledge base of information relevant to regional climate change impacts Other projects produces welldesigned educational and training materials for local application. 11

13 CITIES AT RISK: DEVELOPING ADAPTIVE CAPACITY FOR CLIMATE CHANGE IN ASIA S COASTAL MEGA CITIES Encourage the urban planning community to take a comprehensive view of climate risks, including variability. Recognize and promote the importance of identifying an entrepreneur in urban governments to help make climate change a priority. Urgently build capacity for individual and institutional participation in responding to climate change in Asia s coastal megacities. Project-Related Coastal Activities Understand that effective governance at the systemic level is essential in mainstreaming adaptation strategies. 13
