Schaeffler Canada Inc. Toxics Reduction Act The Toxics Reduction Act aims to protect the health of people and the environment by reducing the use and mission of toxic substances. The act is the cornerstone of Ontario's Toxics Reduction Strategy, focused on: Managing and reducing the use and creation of toxic substances Informing the public about toxics in their communities TRA supplements the traditional 'end of pipe' approach to managing toxic substances released into the environment by focusing on reducing the creation and use of these substances at the 'front end' of manufacturing processes. 1

Hierarchy of Data Quality Level for Quantification Methods (DQL) Highest Quality Data (H) Continuous monitoring of toxic substances, that has been validated by a regulatory agency Comprehensive and validated source testing over a range of operating conditions Quantifications that are derived from comprehensive equipment-specific testing Mass balance of processes where 1% of the material balance is accounted for and It is reasonable to assume the toxic substance will not undergo a chemical transformation through the source/process Above-Average Quality Data (AA) Source testing at one specific operating condition Quantifications that are developed from tests on a moderate to large number of industry sources where the source category population is sufficiently specific to minimize variability Engineering calculations/judgment: quantifications based on fundamental scientific and engineering principles Average Quality Data (A) Quantifications that are developed from tests on a reasonable number of facilities where the source category population is sufficiently specific to minimize variability Engineering calculations/judgment: quantifications derived from fundamental scientific and engineering principles and/or relevant empirical data artially validated source testing at one specific operating condition: emission rate estimates that are from source testing has only been partially validated at a specific operating condition Marginal or ncertain () un-validated source testing on a specific operating condition: emission rate estimates are from un-validated testing quantifications that are developed from tests on only a small number of facilities where there is evidence of variability within the source category population calculations/judgment: quantifications derived from calculations where the scientific/technical integrity of the approach is uncertain are considered to have uncertain data quality 2

Raw Material Receiving -Involving Chromium Chromium in Raw Material Receiving Flow Diagram Raw materials including carbon-based steels, bars and tubes and other process materials are received from suppliers. Materials are sent to the appropriate stage of the facility process where they will either undergo manufacturing processes. Materials from Supplier 57,99 kg DQL = H Raw Material Receiving 57,99 kg DQL = H To Turning 5

Turning Involving Chromium Chromium in Turning Flow Diagram Raw steel stock is rotated while a single point cutting tool is moved parallel to the axis or rotation. This process can be done externally or internally. This process creates metal chips/turnings. Raw Material Receiving 57,992 kg DQL = H Turning 52,532 kg To Heat Treat TR 5,458 kg 6

Heat Treat Involving Chromium Chromium in Heat Treat Flow Diagram Heat-treating is the thermal process that steel must go through in order to harden. Only then will steel acquire the desired properties that make it useful. Those properties are hardness, toughness and wear resistance. The chemical composition of the steel determines the level of each of these properties.. Turning 52,532 kg Heat Treat 52,532 kg To Grinding & Honing 7

Grinding & Honing -Involving Chromium Chromium in Grinding & Honing Flow Diagram This manufacturing process moves a grinding wheel over a surface. The grinding wheel makes contact with the surface and removes a programmed amount of material. This includes horizontal, vertical, rotary, internal and external. This process creates swarf.
