SweFlex Autumn Meeting : Circular Economy: Ink and Ink Handling Paul Pain Head of Technology Waterbased Inks 24 th October, Renewable raw materials used in WaterBased inks 2. Ink handling

1. Renewable raw materials used in Waterbased Inks

Sustainable development is a Long Term Trend Some market sectors currently have lower interest a balanced sustainability approach to renewability Focus is maximum renewability SOCIAL VOC bearable equitable ECOLOGICAL SUSTAIN- ABLE viable ECONOMIC Water footprint Renewability Carbon footprint / energy Compostability / biodegradability 2000 Ecological 2015 Viable Sustainable 3

Maximizing Renewable content Siegwerk has developed complementary products with maximised renewable content for disposables market segment. BC* up to 80%** SOCIAL BC* Up to 30%** bearable ECOLOGICAL equitable SUSTAIN- ABLE viable ECONOMIC BC* <5%** Standard WB Inks UniCUP Current Generation UniRICS Next Generation UniBIO 4 * BC= Biorenewable carbon ** as a proportion of the TV

Biorenewable content of Ink Siegwerk works to increase bio-renewable content in each ink component. Building Block Renewable substitution of ink Component Target Bio- renewable Content Mastergrind Dispersing agents 10% Technical Varnishes Resins Waxes 80%* Extender Resins 80%* Additives Retarding agents Antifoams 100% Discussion around definition of renewable content in the ink is maturing with adoption of ASTM 6866 becoming more widespread. This method measures renewable carbon content based on C 14 measurement. 5 * Measurement of Bio renewable C Content currently ongoing according to ASTM6866

Compost-ability Ensuring the ink has a minimum impact at the end of life of the pacakge Siegwerk ensures that at the end of life of the product, the impact of the ink on the compost-ability of the package is minimised. Unibase and Uni T Concentrate series have been tested for their impact on compost-ability. Using selected colour indices with appropriate Technical Varnishes allows OK compost requirements to be fulfilled. 7

Ink Room Management contributes to Circular Economy Inventory Management Color Matching Ink Blending/Dispensing Reduce Reuse Recycle Press to Proofer Synchronization Return Usage Press Return Ink Press Support Return Handling Color Corrections 10

Reduce: Press Color Matching Time REDUCED Set-up time * due to Color Matchings Set-up time reduction (Color Matching) Previous year avg May June July August September October November December Lab Proofer & Press synchronization gives highly accurate color matches - shade is right first time! 11 * Data from customer projects

Reduce: Press Color Matching Time REDUCED Training time * due to Documentation Reduced training time with documentation* 3,5 months 2 weeks Process for evaluating skill levels and providing documented remote e-learning. 12 * Data from customer projects

Example of Reuse: Return Ink Management Direct Reuse of Press return Inks Press Return Usage (Direct & Mathematical Returns) 50% 40% 30% 20% 10% May June July August September October November December Ink is refreshed and reused directly as same color or converted to similar color All corrections and return movements are recorded for traceability 13 * Data from customer projects

Example Recycle: Return Ink Management Press Return Ink* RECYCLED Press Return Usage (Bulk Returns) 60% 50% 40% 30% 20% 10% May June July August September October November December Careful control of color matching principles allows press returns to be easily converted into other colors via the dispenser Traceability is maintained 14 * Data from customer projects
