Japan-UNIDO Multi-stakehlder Cperatin Dialgue Partnering t Achieve SDGs Industrial Develpment Reprt 2018 Demand fr Manufacturing: Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Develpment Cecilia Ugaz Department f Plicy Research and Statistics Tky, 17 April 2018

The Industrial Develpment Reprt (IDR) Biannual publicatin that addresses the mst pressing issues f inclusive and sustainable industrial develpment facing the wrld The reprt cmbines UNIDO s wn research with inputs frm leading experts n the field Each editin has a particular fcus. In the past, the fcus was mstly n supply-side issues: IDR 2011: Energy efficiency IDR 2013: Emplyment creatin IDR 2016: Technlgy & innvatin 2

IDR 2018: Bringing demand int scene Fcus n supply-side relegated imprtant issues - Rle f manufacturing in welfare f millins f peple by prviding new, better and cheaper gds. - The cnsumptin f manufactured gds (manufacturing demand) - key fr the emergence and expansin f a dmestic industrial sectr. IDR 2018 examines glbal industrializatin frm a demand perspective (cnsumptin f manufactured gds) - Impact f industrial develpment n ur daily life. - Plicy relevance - fcus n demand can fster inclusive and sustainable industrial develpment (ISID). 3

A virtuus circle f manufacturing cnsumptin and industrial develpment Augmented purchasing pwer f all cnsumers Price effect Increase in discretinary incme New incme shifts demand frm necessities t ther gds Decline in prices f massified gds Glbal wages and prfits Variety effect Diversificatin f manufacturing demand Cmpetitin and innvatin increase efficiency further Vlume effect Massificatin f manufacturing demand Cnslidatin f industry increases prductin efficiency 4

Demand and the Agenda 2030 A demand perspective t industrial develpment has imprtant implicatins fr the achievement f SDGs. Fr industrializatin t start and be sustained ver time, a critical mass f cnsumers is required. Demand is key t achieve SDG 9. Other SDGs Price reductin in manufactures facilities the access f pr husehlds t the cnsumptin f new and better gds Creatin f new varieties f fd items which are affrdable fr everybdy helps in achieving fd security and imprving nutritin Prvisin f new, better and cheaper medicines is key in ensuring equitable access t affrdable, safe and quality-assured medicines Prvisin f new and affrdable cnsumer durables reduces the time needed fr husehld prductin and supprts wmen engagement in paid wrk utside hme. Massificatin f envirnmental gds is key t achieve sustainable cnsumptin. 5

Key findings f the IDR 2018 Key finding 1: Cnsumptin is a key driver f industrial develpment. Under the right set f cnditins it set in mtin a virtuus circle f demand diversificatin, incme creatin and inclusive industrializatin (SDG 9). Key finding 2: Industrializatin imprves ur living standards. It brings new and better gds that, thrugh time, becme affrdable fr an increasing number f peple. By ding s, it plays a key rle in the achievement f develpment gals beynd SDG 9. Key finding 3: The impact n envirnment frm massificatin f cnsumptin can be reduced thrugh the technlgical innvatin and develpment f envirnmental gds. Shifting cnsumptin patterns twards envirnmental gds is key t render the virtuus circle sustainable. Key finding 4: Demand cnsideratins braden the scpe f gvernment actin t address ecnmic and inclusive and sustainable industrial develpment utcmes. 6
