2 24/7 Year-round Savings and Benefits the Clean, Reliable Way PureCell Heat and Power Solution The PureCell solution is a clean, efficient, reliable and durable fuel cell power plant. It produces 200 kilowatts of assured power plus 870,000 Btu/hour of heat for combined heat and power applications. Proven technology As of February 2006, the PureCell commercial fuel cell installations have accumulated over 1 billion kilowatt hours of operational experience. Over 260 PureCell solutions have been installed in 19 countries on five continents. Some examples of PureCell solution installations include schools, hospitals, hotels, data centers, high-rise office buildings, military installations and manufacturing sites. Assured power The standard PureCell 200 system is a grid-connected unit, operating in parallel with electric utilities. You can also choose a dual-mode configuration which enables the unit to operate grid-connect or grid-independent switching between modes automatically or on command. With dual-mode configuration your power stays on even when the grid goes down. Environmental Benefits Fuel cells are one of the cleanest power generating technologies available today. PureCell solutions operate well below every state s air emission standards. In fact, in California, the PureCell solution s emissions are well below the strictest requirements as established by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Add in its quiet sound profile, and the PureCell solution is a welcome power alternative anywhere indoors or outdoors, in cramped cities or quiet rural neighborhoods. These attributes coupled with high efficiencies help you meet the most stringent environmental standards as well as your own internal sustainability targets. Clean, efficient, reliable, secure and quiet the PureCell 200 power system is the ultimate solution. 3 Exhaust heat is lost energy the PureCell solution recycles it By the time grid-supplied power reaches you, much of the fuel s original energy has been lost but not its cost. You pay for the lost energy. PureCell combined heat and power solutions are more than twice as efficient as the electrical grid. So you get double the energy from the same amount of fuel instant efficiency and savings. First, there are no transmission losses. Energy is created right where it s needed at your facility. Second, exhaust heat is captured to generate additional useable energy for heating or cooling. The conversion of fuel to useable energy is more complete, which translates to higher efficiency. And the exhaust heat recovery is one of the simplest in the industry overall efficiencies as high as 90% can be achieved by capturing the system s exhaust. The process is cleaner, more reliable, and makes better use of natural and anaerobic digester gas fuels. The bottom line? Continuous savings for you and for the environment. Traditional Central Power Plant - Low efficiency - More pollution Waste heat A significant amount of energy is lost to the atmosphere as waste heat. Coal Oil Natural gas 100% 67% 33% Electricity Source: Adapted from U.S. Combined Heat and Power Association. In today s centralized power generation, a plant typically releases 67% of energy from fuel as waste heat, and the remaining 33% as electricity. PureCell On-site Combined Heat & Power Solution - High efficiency - Ultra-low pollution Waste heat More waste heat is recovered and converted to useable energy. 10% 90% Natural gas Anaerobic digester gas 100% Electricity Thermal energy Source: Adapted from U.S. Combined Heat and Power Association. By recovering and using waste heat, the PureCell cogeneration system can release as little as 10% of energy as heat to the atmosphere, while the remaining 90% is converted to electricity, steam/hot water and chilled water, depending on the application.

4 24/7 Year-round Savings and Benefits the Clean, Reliable Way Inside the PureCell TM 200 Power Solution A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that combines hydrogen fuel and oxygen from the air to produce electricity, heat and water. Fuel cells operate without combustion, so they are virtually pollution-free. Since the fuel is converted directly to electricity, a fuel cell can operate at much higher efficiencies than internal combustion engines, extracting more electricity from the same amount of fuel. The fuel cell itself has no moving parts making it a quiet and reliable source of power. 5 How It Works The fuel cell is composed of an anode (a negative electrode that provides electrons), an electrolyte in the center, and a cathode (a positive electrode that accepts electrons). As hydrogen flows into the fuel cell anode, platinum coating on the anode helps to separate the hydrogen atoms into protons (hydrogen ions) and electrons. The electrolyte in the center allows only the protons to pass through the electrolyte to the cathode side of the fuel cell. The electrons cannot pass through this electrolyte and, therefore, must flow through an external circuit in the form of electric current. This current can power an electric load. As oxygen flows into the fuel cell cathode, another platinum coating helps the oxygen, protons, and electrons combine to produce pure water and heat. Hydrogen ANODE ELECTROLYTE CATHODE Oxygen Individual fuel cells can then be combined into a fuel cell "stack". H+ H+ 1 Fuel Processor (Reformer) The Fuel Processor reforms the fuel (natural gas or anaerobic digester gas) to a hydrogen rich gas to feed the fuel cell stack. 2 H 2 O Heat Fuel Cell Stack Hydrogen rich gas and oxygen from the air are combined in an electrochemical process that produces Direct Current (DC) power, pure water and heat. The byproduct water is utilized in the operation of the power plant. The exhaust heat is available through an integral hot water heat exchanger for use in meeting other facility thermal energy requirements. 3 Power Conditioner The DC power provided by the Fuel Cell Stack is conditioned to provide high quality Alternating Current (AC) output power. 4 Electronics and Controls Each PureCell solution can be remotely controlled and monitored.

8 24/7 Year-round Savings and Benefits the Clean, Reliable Way Renewable fuel experience Free fuel. That s what anaerobic digester gas (ADG) is for the PureCell 200 solution. ADG is a by-product of the wastewater treatment process and contains methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases. UTC Power fuel cells currently generate 2.8 megawatts of premium quality power using this fuel. That equates to over 6 million kilowatt-hours of experience, so you can rest assured our product is proven in this application. The PureCell 200 power solution is the first ADG fuel cell tested by the EPA through its stringent Environmental Technology Verification program. More proof it will operate effectively on your ADG site. And that s good for the environment. The Wastewater Treatment Plant in Koln, Germany, uses ADG generated by the wastewater treatment process to power the PureCell 200 power solution that provides electricity for the facility. requires 60% methane dual fuel capability gas processing unit (GPU) - prdesigned and ETV tested * Power Plant Rating (Anaerobic Digester Gas) Overall Efficiency 90% Net Power, kw 200 The Wastewater Treatment Plant in Bronx, New York, powers three PureCell 200 solutions.
