8 Blue Growth current scenario European coasts and seas have the potential to deliver growth and jobs in the coming years. In order to achieve Blue Growth, highly qualified and skilled professionals are needed. Blue Economy sectors are experiencing difficulties in finding the right employees and most sectors expect these difficulties to continue in the near future. Already identified gaps and needs a skills gap between education offer and labour market needs, especially with regards to technological developments and innovation a lack of communication and cooperation between education and industry a lack of attractiveness and awareness of career opportunities in the blue economy lack of ocean literacy culture

9 5 sectors with high potential for sustainable Blue Growth Ocean energy (renewable: wind, waves, tides) Marine Biotechnology (medicines, industrial enzymes) Coastal & Maritime Tourism (coastal tourism, cruise tourism, yachting) Aquaculture (farming of fish, shellfish, marine plants) Seabed Mining (mineral resources) Ship Building & Ship Repair Fisheries Off Shore Oil &Gas Transport Cargo & ferry

18 Coastal & maritime tourism in Europe Key challenges for Coastal & Maritime Tourism in Europe The case for Ecotourism in Coastal Destinations Ecotourism operators: Drive up daily expenditure at destination by 30% Bring in new skills and product innovation Rooted in local communities: create wealth & jobs Support environmental conservation & outreach

19 MedPAN, RAC/SPA The 2016 status of Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean 2017 (in prep.). MedPAN & UNEP-MAP-SPA/RAC Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs). 73% of the area covered is Located in the Western Mediterranean. 90% of the total area covered by MPAs and OECMs are found in EU waters. 898 Marine Natura 2000 sites (!)

30 filling the gap Specific training courses aside of formal education. Stakeholders create their own specific training careers. Establish alliances between conservation/environmental groups and touristic operators.. Find a meeting point between EU directives/roadmaps and the Academic sector that develops curricula and core competences (Teaching plans). Accommodate timings of establishment of new degrees, masters and careers according to EU Blue Growths focus sectors.
