Who we are The Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO) is an International Financial Institution established by the Nordic Governments in NEFCO provides results-based financing for green growth. All projects financed by NEFCO need to demonstrate that they will benefit the environment in a cost-effective way. To ensure that these benefits will materialise, financing is released in tranches against monitored milestone results, and environmental outcomes are monitored annually for as long as NEFCO is involved.

W here w e are NEFCO has financed projects in over 60 countries since its inception. The current geographic focus is on Eastern Europe, with most of the business operations taking place in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Moldova, Georgia and Armenia. We administer funds to a total value of EUR 460 million. In 2015, we approved 165 new projects to a total value of EUR million.

NEFCO in Latvia Co-operation with the Latvian Environmental Investment Fund (LEIF) since the 1990's Wastewater treatment, sustainable manure treatment, biogas production, energy efficiency Upgrading and refurbishment of hydropower plants jointly with Norwegian investors Current focus: Investments that benefit the ecological state of the Baltic Sea Loan and equity financing available for Baltic Sea projects

HELCOM BalticSeaAction Plan (B SA P ) Adopted by the HELCOM member countries in 2007 (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden) The aim is to restore the good ecological status of the Baltic marine environment by 2021 Goals: Baltic Sea unaffected by eutrophication Baltic Sea life undisturbed by hazardous substances Favorable status of Baltic Sea biodiversity Maritime activities in the Baltic Sea carried out in an environmentally friendly way

The BSAP Fund The Fund was set up in 2010 to speed up the implementation of the BSAP plan NIB and NEFCO are joint managers of the Fund. Sweden has committed SEK 102,5 million (EUR 10,25 million) and Finland EUR 2 million The Fund has approved nearly 40 projects per today The projects are spread across the Baltic Sea Region from Russia, Poland, Estonia to Sweden and Finland as well as the Baltic Sea catchment area in Belarus

BSAP financing Expenditures for project preparation and development; feasibility studies, development of business ideas and cash-flow models Technical assistance for institutional support, i.e. training and support needed for project preparation, development and implementation Improving efficiency and quality in project implementation, e.g. equipment for demonstration In November 2016 some EUR 1.7 million remains in the BSAP Fund

Case studies

Biogasproduction and nutrientrecycling Biogas plants in Poland, City of Zabrze, Mysliborz Biogas from algae + Biogas Education and development Center, City of Trelleborg Jordberga farming system project (Skånska Biobränslebolaget AB) Crops are cultivated with a cost and environmentally efficient method for a full scale biogas plant

Pyrolysisand nutrientrecycling Study and tests: Pyrolysis of chicken manure for production of biofuel, fertiliser and energy (Scandinavian Enviro Systems) Demonstration plant: Closing nutrient cycles of material flows from agriculture, industry and communities by combining biogas and pyrolysis processes (Biovakka, Finland)

CASE STUDY Im proving m anure treatm ent in Latvia Client: Norwegian-Latvian company Baltic Pork Improved manure management and biogas production The biogas plants are located in Allazi and Laubere Reduced discharges of phosphorus and nitrogen to surrounding waterways Reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by approx. 1,500 tonnes per year

Baltic Deal Aims to increase the knowledge exchange of sustainable agri-environmental practices in the Baltic Sea Region Provides advisory organisations with improved and cost efficient methods and tools how to support farmers to reduce nutrient losses 100 demonstration farms Tested measures: plant cover outside growing season, improved fertilisation methods, manure management and treatment of run-off waters Baltic Deal has seven project partners in seven countries (two farmer's federations and five advisory services) Funded by the Baltic Sea Regional Programme and the BSAP Fund (EUR 795,000)
