4 115 years DH history The first steps to construct a DH system in the centre of Copenhagen was taken just after The customers were CPH City Hall, hospitals and public baths. Heat production was based on CHP.

5 115 years DH history 1945 DH systems were until now primarily established in the larger cities. The DH companies were municipality-owned.

6 115 years DH history Increasing welfare in the Danish society. Water-based heating systems are replacing stoves and fireplaces. New company structure: Groups of citizens join together and establish consumer cooperatives - inspired by the countryside 75 years ago.

8 115 years DH history Oil crisis in 1973 and The war in the Middle- East resulted in increasing oil prices. Oil supplies to Denmark were reduced. About 92 % of the energy consumption in Denmark was at that time based on imported oil.

47 Large heat Pumps in the DH System Why put focus on heat pumps? Biomass- and waste heat CHP is today the cheapest and most sustainable way to produce RE district heating. It may change in the future, as the price of biomass can increase by changing taxes and there may be increased demand for biomass, for example from the transport sector. This means that in the long term there is a need for alternative and supplementary district heating technologies.

48 Large Heat Pumps in the DH system Why put focus on heat pumps? Heat pumps are the most promising green technology to replace the existing base load. Heat pumps can utilize heat sources with a relatively low temperature that otherwise can not be used for district heating. It includes heat sources such as geothermal, industrial surplus heat, waste water, seawater, groundwater and air.
