Established July 2000 KNCPC Host: Kenya Industrial Research & Development Institute (KIRDI) 2006: Non-profit Trust Starting Sept to-date: process to convert to Semi Autonomous Government Agency (SAGA) Ministry of Industrialization: Recurrent financial support Enable scale-up and higher impact Latitude for Centre to leverage external funding 2

Programs 1. UNIDO Enterprise Level Indicator Development 3 (completed) 2. UNEP Pre-SME Toolkit Testing 2010/2011 (completed) 3. SIDA-World Bank Regional Program on Cleaner Production (Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda & Burundi) ( ) 4. The Resource Efficiency Project in Selected Industries, UNEP, KCO 5. Enhancing competitiveness of selected SME sectors through cleaner & efficient production..min. Of Industrialization 6. Eco-labeling for Leather Footwear (UNEP-DTIE)- (Kenya, South Africa, Brazil, China, India and Mexico)- ( ) 7. Women and Climate Change ( )..DANIDA 8. Preparation Country Climate Change NAMAs and NAPs 9. Environmental Assessments (EIA & EA)

1. Enterprise-Level Indicators for Resource Productivity & Environmental Performance 4 UNIDO sponsored (2009/2010) Participating countries: Kenya, Peru and Sri-lanka Enterprise level indicator tool kit tested in 3 industries each..pre-smes 2pager 12nov.doc Kenyan Companies: i. HACO Industries Ltd, Nairobi (Chemical) ii. iii. Chandaria Industries (Paper industry) Pwani Oil Products (Edible oil/soap)

Focus of toolkit Increasing the productive 5 use of natural resources, minimize generation of waste and emissions Resources targeted include: materials, energy, water, waste and emissions (RECP) Justification: to have a uniform toolkit for determining collective impact of CP options implemented (not projected!) relative to total resource use & environmental impact of the company Environmental performance is improved when resource productivity increases (+ve) and when pollution intensity decreases (-ve).

Successes: 6 Chandaria_web_recp_indicator_kenya.pdf Chandaria Industries Ltd. Products RECP benefits paper products USD 623,768 HACO Industries stationery, shavers, personal care and household hygiene products. Pwani Oil Products edible oils and fats as well as laundry bar soaps. USD 548,000 USD 634

2. UNEP Pre-SME Toolkit Testing 7 The project Promoting Resource Efficiency in Small and Medium Enterprises(PRE-SME) was an industrial exercise on integrated implementation of the Toolkit of Promoting Resource Efficiency in SMEs (PRE-SME) and the Responsible Production Handbook Project objective: to develop capacity of KNCPC to provide technical support to SMEs on resource efficiency and responsible production and assist 2 industries to develop and implement an integrated Resource Efficiency improvement programme that includes effective chemicals management and Responsible Production Industries: Frigoken (K) Ltd and Osho Chemicals in Nairobi. Frigoken was brought in after Homegrown dropped out. The PRE-SME... a major reference source and guide for provision of technical support to SMEs Template: PRE-SME report template.docx

1. Osho Chemicals Sector: Chemical (Agrochemicals) 8 Key Issues: Energy management, Measures: Recuperator for pre-heating fresh air for drying room (saving is expected to be USD 10,270/yr) Fuel switch: Kerosene to agro briquettes (net energy cost saving is expected to be USD 1.35 million/yr) 2. Frigoken (K) Ltd Sector: Agriculture (fresh produce) Key Issues: Large volumes of wastewater effluents, solid wastes, energy inefficiency

Frigoken...cont d Organizational: Energy monitoring, target setting, 9 employee capacity building Materials acquisition and management Using crates with smaller perforations to reduce spillages and damage of beans Raw material loss reduction : from tons (2010) to 5.85 tons (2011)...59% reduction Process control and modifications: Reuse relatively clean wastewaters from blanching and cooking sections. Using counter current or multi-stage rinsing to reduce water use Install high-pressure, low-volume spray nozzles. Water consumption improved from 61kgs beans/m 3 in 2010 to current average of 69kgs beans/m 3 to June 2011 Technology substitution: Installing a reverse osmosis closed loop water treatment system... treat and recycle wastewater (savings of $ 66,974/yr)

3. Basin-wide application: Promoting CP in L. Victoria Basin 10 Coverage: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi Coordination: by KNCPC Overarching Program: Implemented under Lake Victoria Environmental Management Program II (LVEMPII) Effectiveness: July 2010: in Ke, Tz, Ug. Rwanda and Burundi not yet Financing: SIDA through Worldbank + Partner States considering Inception phase: Phase 1: Phase 2:

Long Term Impact 11 To contribute towards the long-term impact of sustainable industrial development in the Lake Victoria Basin. To be realized thro increased industrial productivity & reduced industrial pollution loadings into the lake......in the long-term...a RECP Strategy for the Lake Basin.

Activities Component 1: RECP Education 12 & Information Dissemination Output 1.1: RECP awareness increased Production of awareness materials Awareness meetings RECP industry sector manuals Output 1.2: Regional RECP Network enhanced Launch of L. Victoria Basin RECP Network Network meetings Network publication Development of protocol on information and knowledge sharing and brokering

Output 2.1: Increased integration of RECP in planning and development 13 Prepare policy briefs on RECP Initiate preparation of regional RECP strategy Output 2.2: Regional RECP Award established for industry Develop RECP award categories and criteria Publicize the award scheme Conduct the annual award ceremony Output 2.3: CP Technologies (CPT) promoted
