2 The background As urban areas are responsible for 70% of Europe s energy consumption, they play a crucial role for the decarbonisation of the EU s energy system. Within cities, buildings consume the biggest share of energy followed by transport. When transforming European cities into Smart Cities, actions should, amongst others, focus on ways to cover thermal needs in urban areas in a smart way DHC Technology Platform Brussels, January 2016 Main change Reduce the energy demand and GHG emissions and increasing the use of renewable energy sources in cities

7 Laguna de Duero, Torrelago district The Spanish demo site Small town located in the middle of Spain, fully integrated in the metropolitan area of Valladolid

8 Soma, Manisa province The Turkish demo site Western Turkey. The town has grown around the lignite mining industry and the lignite-fired thermal power plant in the city

9 Lund, Linero district The Swedish demo site Southern Sweden. Lund is a medium-sized university city with a research-intensive industry

11 The City Cluster model for the evaluation of CITyFiED replication Demo Sites Laguna de Duero Lund Soma City Cluster 11 Cities Community of Interest 40 Cities Key to the replication of the CITyFiED methodology Feasability study to see the replication potential in each of the 11 cities in the city cluster. Framework including technological measures, nontechnological measures and a concept for business models The output is collected in a report containing the replication potential in all 11 city districts.
