4 Vision 2020 Interview with Jean-Louis Chaussade MAKING THE PLANET SUSTAINABLE IS THE BEST JOB ON EARTH What challenges are associated with SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT s businesses? Our business is to provide essential services and respond to the major challenges faced by the planet. We have reached a population of 7 billion, with another 1.5 billion forecast by 2030; 65% of this increase will be in Asia and nearly all of it will be in urban areas. The urban population, which today represents 50% of the global population, will represent 60% of the total in 2025 and 70% in Cities consume resources and produce waste. The second factor is regulation, which is evolving as environmental awareness grows on the major global markets. The final factor is scarcity of resources. On the water market, the gap between need and resources is expected to reach 40% in 2030 and, by this date, 50% of the global population will be living in countries suffering water stress. On the waste market, urbanization and rising industrial output will create unprecedented pressure on raw materials. This will give impetus to recycling and waste recovery, in terms of both new materials and energy. We are an international player in water and waste management, with strong local roots and I am confident that our Group can respond to these environmental and social challenges, just as it always has. 02 Our challenges, our vision, our commitments

5 SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT The world progresses by undergoing periods of radical change. Our Group was created 150 years ago during one such period a time of profound change in hygiene and public health. The next change, in urban comfort nearly a century later, was a time of expansion for the Group. Today we face a third period of change, in which resources are becoming depleted. The fight against pollution, scarcer and more costly resources, increasing environmental regulation, water stress, galloping urbanization: our businesses are at the heart of these issues and can be part of the solution for our public and industrial customers. We want to help our customers become leaders in environmental performance. In terms of water, I am struck by how many technological advances have been made in a short space of time. The arrival of new technologies in information and mobility (smart meters, remote services, etc.) will allow us to protect resources and improve the performance of our networks. Our willingness to offer solutions that are more in line with people s expectations has now become a reality in France with the Contract for Water Health, while internationally we are working with public authorities to implement innovative governance: greater transparency, more collaborative governance and an economic model not based solely on volumes of water distributed are the key elements of this approach. In countries experiencing strong growth, development challenges imply environmental challenges to be faced, prompting us to invent or promote new contractual models of this kind. In our dealings with industrial customers, we bring a global vision of the water cycle and cutting-edge, customized solutions that make us a strategic and preferred partner. In waste, energy or materials recovery is set to become the new face of our sector. We will be working with industrial companies towards greater integration of the concept of a circular economy into the lifecycles of their products. We also support our municipal customers to control their budgets more effectively through efficient waste management, working on the three performance vectors of collection, sorting and recovery. By 2017, we aim to achieve a recovery rate of two tonnes of waste for every tonne eliminated! We have developed our expertise, and today we are one of the key producers of secondary raw materials in Europe, as well as a major green energy producer due to our know-how in incineration, methane fermentation and biogas recovery. Today, SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT focuses on partnership and co-construction. Can you explain this strategy? It s in our DNA! We believe that, to perform well, we have to be open and co-construct with our partners at all levels of our business. With our customers, we have to listen to their needs and expectations so that we can give them the best possible response and support. For our international expansion, we rely on local partners for a better understanding of the regions in which we operate. In the area of innovation, we forge partnerships with universities and industrial companies to speed up the development of new solutions. We want to engage in dialogue with civil society, as can be seen from our many exchanges with our Foresight Advisory Council (FAC) and our stakeholder sessions. Managing megalopolises The proportion of cities with populations of more than 10 million is growing dramatically, with the current number of 23 expected to increase to 36 by In 20 years, cities in developing countries will contain 4 billion people, that will be half the global population. In the future, we will have to make cities more pleasant places to live by developing efficient local services, including sustainable development issues upstream of regional planning, developing synergies between different urban services and listening to city inhabitants in order to construct the solutions they need. Optimizing the efficiency of drinking water networks Lyonnaise des Eaux has developed techniques for reducing leaks in water distribution networks. With the permanent prelocation system, acoustic sensors are placed on the networks, enabling a very rapid response if a leak is detected. In Vienne (France), this solution offers a potential gain of 1.9 million m 3 over five years. 200,000 people a day on average move to a city somewhere in the world 04 Our challenges, our vision, our commitments

7 SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT 36 cities with populations of more than 10 million by 2025, compared with 23 today (source: UN) 15 to 30 years is the time remaining before the first shortages of some metals Renewable materials Natural resources are depleted because they are overburdened. The threat concerns fossil fuels, but raw materials are also affected. We talk about peak oil, but we pay less attention to the metal shortages that are likely to take place in the next 15 to 30 years (in gold, silver, lead, zinc and copper). This scarcity of natural resources is altering the position of waste recycling and recovery in our models. The aim is to produce secondary raw materials and energy. Waste is becoming a source of electricity and heat Launched in October 2011, the ReEnergy waste-to-energy plant in the Netherlands is one of the best-performing sites in Europe. It processes the waste of more than 1.9 million people a year and generates 256,000 MWh of electricity, equivalent to the power consumption of 70,000 households. ReEnergy also provides heat to green houses located near the plant, saving around 3.5 million m³ of natural gas. Production of recycled plastic bottles The quality of the secondary raw materials produced from waste deposits is a decisive factor in the success of the recycling sector. With the creation of France Plastiques Recyclage, SITA France and Paprec Group have teamed up to design one of the world s leading facilities for the production of bottles in food-grade recycled PET. The Limay plant can process 40,000 tonnes of bottles a year and produce 30,000 tonnes of food-grade recycled PET. Making the planet sustainable is the best job on earth 05

8 Our challenges, our vision, our commitments Challenges & solutions 97.2% of water on the Earth is saltwater Tackling water stress Present in large quantities and renewable, fresh water is unfortunately not evenly distributed worldwide in terms of either quality or quantity. Nearly a billion people today do not have access to drinking water and 2.6 billion do not have access to sanitation services. Furthermore, by 2030 one in ten people will be living in a country suffering water stress. Reuse and desalination now provide us with alternative resources. Desalinating seawater to ease pressure on continental water In Australia, a continent seriously affected by climate change, desalination plants in Perth and Melbourne built by Degrémont aim to supply more than 1.5 million people with fresh water, while preserving the environment. In Perth, the brine discharge system was researched extensively by the University of New South Wales to avoid impacting the protected marine area downstream. 06 Our challenges, our vision, our commitments

The aim: not only to keep prices down, but also to play a role in the creation of services suitable for the people's needs and including ambitious environmental and social objectives. To tackle this challenge, SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT has established broad-based dialogue at all levels of its business and has introduced operational innovation to work within a new type of governance. Increasing access to essential services The UN General Assembly has made access to drinking water and sanitation services a universal right. The real challenge is to put it into practice. The operational responses provided by SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT differ according to the economic situations of cities and countries and the existence and condition of their infrastructure. SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT provides technical expertise and implements in partnership with local authorities social and societal engineering that is appropriate for each context. An Alliance contract to manage water in Adelaide In Australia, SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT manages the production and distribution of drinking water and provides sanitation management services as part of the Alliance form of governance. Under the contract, governance is shared between the public authorities and SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT. The profits generated by the contract are also shared, but so are the associated risks. Promoting access to water for all In the developing countries where SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT operates, the Group carries out initiatives to connect disadvantaged areas to water and sanitation services, through its Water for all programme. At Casablanca in Morocco, 15,700 low-income householders have been connected using Global Partnership on Output Based Aid, a multi-donor fund managed by the World Bank. In countries where the Group does not have a presence, the SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT Initiatives fund supports projects in the fields of access to water and sanitation services. 12 Our challenges, our vision, our commitments Two businesses WATER: RENEWING THE WATER MANAGEMENT MODEL THE CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH WATER AND SANITATION ARE INCREASINGLY COMPLEX, BOTH IN FRANCE AND AT A GLOBAL LEVEL. FROM READILY AVAILABLE WATER TO VULNERABLE WATER, THE WATER MANAGEMENT MODEL HAS TO PROVIDE VITAL WATER AND SANITATION SERVICES WHILST PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT. The 20 th century saw the creation of infrastructures and networks to deliver water to the greatest possible number of people. The challenge of the 21 st century will be to protect the quality and quantity of this resource. With this in view, SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT has developed innovative solutions to expand its scope of intervention from the small water cycle (production, consumption and treatment within the city) to the large water cycle (protection of surface water watercourses and the coast; underground water; and natural environments in urban areas). SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT is taking action to reinvent water management models both in France and internationally. The Group is thus tackling major social challenges in terms of transparency and clarity for citizens. SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT operates in water management in Europe through its subsidiaries Lyonnaise des Eaux and Agbar. In France, Lyonnaise des Eaux supplies nearly 12 million people with drinking water and covers 20% of the population with its sanitation services. Agbar, which leads the Spanish market, has based its development on innovation to respond to the specific challenges associated with water in this country: periods of drought and peaks in tourist inflows. Spain has become SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT s second-largest water market. The Group is also consolidating its position in the industrial market, which is undergoing profound change and is a source of growth. Industrial companies currently consume nearly 800 billion m 3 of water. This figure will reach 1,500 billion m 3 by With Degrémont Industry, created from the merger between Degrémont and Ondeo IS, the Group provides global solutions to help industrial companies to achieve their performance targets and respect the environment. Protecting water resources This has been made possible by the latest technologies (reuse, desalination, etc.) developed by SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT and its subsidiaries. Farmers at the heart of key issues With agricultural land accounting for more than half the 55 million hectares of mainland France, and over 350,000 farms, French farmers are at the heart of major environmental challenges and the effects of climate change. New solutions for water in agriculture Lyonnaise des Eaux and France's largest agricultural cooperative, Terrena, have joined forces to create ONOVA, a company dedicated to the environmental needs of farmers. 10 Our challenges, our vision, our commitments

14 Our challenges, our vision, our commitments Two businesses WASTE: PROMOTING RECOVERY THE FIGHT AGAINST POLLUTION AND THE SCARCITY OF RAW MATERIALS HAVE PUT WASTE RECOVERY AT THE TOP OF THE AGENDA. EVERY STAGE OF WASTE MANAGEMENT REQUIRES HIGH-LEVEL EXPERTISE FOR MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY AND THE CREATION OF VIABLE AND HIGH-PERFORMANCE RECOVERY PROCESSES. In 1919, SITA France was created to support the mechanization of waste collection in Paris. The Group built up real expertise in waste management from the waste collection and processing activities that developed during the 1950s. Today, SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT is positioned throughout the entire waste cycle and puts its know-how into waste recycling by creating secondary raw materials and recovering energy. This is a genuine priority in a context of dwindling raw material resources and the fight against the pollution of natural environments. Since the end of 2011, SITA has been operating an exemplary, cutting-edge energy recovery plant. The ReEnergy plant, in Roosendaal, Netherlands, is one of the most modern and high-performance sites in Europe. With a capacity of 291,000 tonnes, it processes the waste of more than 1.9 million people a year and generates 256,000 MWh of power, equivalent to the electricity consumption of 70,000 households. Creating partnerships with industrial companies is an essential lever to drive waste recovery forward. With Nexans, a global cable expert, SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT has created a used cable recycling unit to recover copper as well as plastic from cable sheaths. Specific recycling processes have also been set up for end-of-life aircrafts, in partnership with Airbus, Snecma and other partners in the aeronautics sector, and for end-of-life boats. Lastly, the Group has implemented clean-up projects at industrial sites, such as the former Metaleurop Nord metalworks in France. Between 2005 and 2008, SITA s teams worked on rehabilitating the site (analyzing safety risks, dismantling and cleaning up pollution) and on the economic redeployment of the site to create the SITA AGORA eco-cluster. This is an industrial and tertiary zone for environmental businesses (a sorting and collection centre for non-hazardous industrial waste NORVALO, a multi-modal platform for the treatment of polluted earth and sediment SITA FD, etc.). Happy Nappy is a research programme to assess the recycling potential of nappies. With a high level of process automation and tools based on cuttingedge technologies, VERDI increased its sorting capacity to 10 tonnes an hour to achieve a recovery rate of over 90%. 16 Our challenges, our vision, our commitments Two businesses INTERNATIONAL: CONTINUING GROWTH CONQUERING NEW GEOGRAPHICAL MARKETS AND EXPANDING OUR SERVICES TO INDUSTRIAL CUSTOMERS ARE THE TWO KEY PILLARS OF OUR GROWTH STRATEGY. SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT has operations on five continents. Outside France, which is the Group s historical home, and Europe, SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT is continuing to develop its operations on its traditional markets, seeking out new, flourishing regional markets and strengthening its presence in growth areas such as water and waste management for industry. In China, the government has chosen to create large, ultra-modern industrial complexes that are subject to strict waste and environmental regulations. The Group, which has been present in the country for over 30 years, has continued its expansion there, particularly by developing its activities at seven large industrial parks, including Shanghai Chemical industry Park (SCiP), the biggest petrochemicals and industrial site in Asia. The Group is consolidating its positions elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in Australia, where it operates both businesses and provides new contractual models as well as tailor-made environmental solutions. In the US, the Group is expanding steadily in the water sector with its subsidiary United Water (which is the second-largest private operator, active in 26 US states), and offers innovative intervention models for its local authority customers. The countries of the Maghreb and the Middle East are also growth markets for SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT. In the Middle East, the Group is supported by the longstanding presence of Degrémont, an international player in equipment design, construction and operation on the water treatment market and for public and industrial customers. However, the Group also works in the region within partnerships, for example in water and sanitation services management in the city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. The Group has achieved significant success in the Maghreb, where in 2011 it renewed its drinking water and sanitation services management contract in Algiers for a period of five years. The recycled water generates a saving of more than 34 million m 3 of drinking water each year. As Samra in Jordan The As Samra wastewater plant is almost self-sufficient in energy. With hydraulic turbines and gas engines fuelled by biogas from sludge digestion, the wastewater plant produces 95% of the energy required for the water treatment.
