2 Summer Academy Water and Sustainability On the occasion of the China Year 2012, the Cologne Environmental and Consumer Protection Agency, together with the University of Cologne, is hosting for the first time a summer academy involving 50 students from China and Germany, who pursue technical, ecological, legal or economic studies. The Leitmotif of the summer school will be sustainable development in the water sector. The speakers are all highly qualified experts from different government agencies, organisations and companies. The lectures will be held in English. Due to its numerous ecological and cultural functions, water, as a resource, has a special role to play in the lives of human beings. These essential basic functions make water resources worthy of protection with the aim of safeguarding the current water supply as well as the supply for future generations, as water quality and quantity are threatened. The collaboration between China and Germany in the area of water goes back till 1988, the year in which both countries have begun to jointly research water.

3 The Initiators of the summer school Professor Dr. Ernst Drösemeier has been directing/managing the Environmental and Consumer Protection Agency of the City of Cologne since The agency deals among others with biodiversity, landscape conservation, soil and ground water protection, climate protection, waste management, animal protection and food control. Professor Dr. Kirk W. Junker is head of the International Master of Environmental Science programme (IMES) of the University of Cologne. At the same time he holds the Chair for US-American Law. Previously, he was Legal Counsel to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources.

4 Programme The topic Water and Sustainability will be covered fundamentally and interdisciplinarily by way of lectures, seminars, workshops and excursions to laboratories and facilities, in which lecturers and experts will pass on their theoretical and practical know-how. In the mornings, there will be lectures and workshops in different subject areas, such as Water Law, Water Management Water Supply and Disposal Purification of Water Savings potential of water in industrial processes Water Contamination Renaturation of streams and rivers Water and Environmental Medicine Water and Environmental Education Water from a cultural and historical perspective

5 Programme In the afternoon there will be excursions to e.g.: Sewage treatment plants Hazardous waste dumps Waterworks and water laboratories Reservoir lakes Another focus of the summer academy will be the development of concepts for the handling/dealing/use of water taking different cultural ideas into account. We also attach considerable importance to students and scientists building a network that lasts beyond the summer academy. Thus it shall be easier for Chinese and German students to find work in Germany or in China after having finished their degree. As a result the cooperation of the two countries in relation to water shall become even more intensive. All students will receive a certificate at the end of the summer academy.

6 Participation Who can participate? Advanced students who study degrees related to environmental matters and have a background in the natural or technical sciences, law or economics. Advanced knowledge of English is a prerequisite. Venue Seminars and workshops will be held at the University of Cologne. Registration deadline 20 July You will receive confirmation.
