2 THE COMMUNITY 1/3 1.1 The history of the Municipality The origins of Forni di Sopra, which is identified with the three historic villages of Cella, Vico and Andrazza, can be traced back to Roman times on the basis of the archaeological finds and the etymology of the denominations of several localities (e.g. the name Vico comes from latin language vicus : village). The first document mentioning the name of Forni dates back to 778 a.d and in the 997 a.d was in possession of the Patriarch of Aquileia, who in 1326 gave it to the Savorgnan feud within Forni di Sotto. The two existing communes remained united until the 1445 in the sole name of Forni Savorgnani. Since then, they was managed by the Savorgnan family and improve together. After the Austrian domination, Forni di Sopra was united to Italy in 1866

3 THE COMMUNITY 2/3 1.2 The geography of the Municipality The Municipality rises to 907 meters above sea level and is situated in the Valle del Tagliamento, in the Alpine region of Carnia, on the left bank of the river, being the westernmost municipality of the province of Udine. Forni di Sopra is dominated by the beautiful dolomite peaks of the Cridola mountains (2,581 m.) Monfalconi to the west, Pramaggiore (2,478 m.) to the southwest. Part of the municipal territory is included in the Natural Park of the Dolomiti Friulane which is a natural protected area and was definitively established in 1996 as a regional natural park (36,950 hectares).

5 RENEWABLE ENERGY The Municipality is a member of the Alpine Pearls network and bases its local development strategies on renewable energy, soft mobility and sustainable tourism. In February 2006 Forni di Sopra became a "Perla delle Alpi", within the "Alps Mobility II - Alpine Pearls" project (European Mountain Development Program). In 2006 the municipality was certified for Environmental Management by EMAS. The Municipality aims to achieve energy self-sufficiency by means of its renewable sources: hydro-electric power plants, extension of the district heating with biomass plant, solar collectors and photovoltaic for huts and sport centers.

6 RENEWABLE ENERGY Forni di Sopra won the following awards linked to renewable energy: WWF AWARD Buone Nuove 2012 Legambiente - First National Award Best Practices Bionergy 2013 Alterenergy- First Award Energy Sustainability for Adriatic Small Communities 2013 Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia / CEP-REC Environment Award SAVE (Sustainable Actions Versus Energy) 2014

Current practices of Renewable Energy Fields: Energy Autonomy: -Expanding district heating network -Optimization of the energy consumption of the public lighting Renewable Electricity: -Two Hydroelectric Power Plants -Solar PV generates KWh/yr Renewable Heat: -Biomass Plant entirely fed by local forest biomass -Six Solar PV with a capacity of 1,3 KW each

9 SPECIFIC LOCAL FOCUS Local Development Strategy Sustainable tourism practices are at the core of the local development strategy of the Municipality of Forni di Sopra. Forni di Sora attracts tourist interested in outdoor activities, such as climbing, Nordic walking, mountain biking, horse riding, fishing, skiing, etc. All tourist and sports resorts/structures in he Municipality are powered by means of renewable energy resources. This makes of Forni di Sopra a best practice in the field of sustainable tourism.
