An early warning algal bloom system combining remote sensing and in situ data is developed for costal waters of Norway through the DISMAR project (EU P5 IST Data Integration System for Marine Pollution and Water Quality) Kai Sørensen, Jan Karud, Jo Høkedal and Torbjørn Johnsen Norwegian Institute for Water Research

Objectives Develop an intelligent system for monitoring an forecasting of the marine environment Develop a prototype user-specified decision support system for cost effective management of Oil pollution Harmful Algal Blooms Intergrating satellite data and in situ data (ferrybox data) in one unified portal based on WMS technology Adding information from HAB analyser from water samples Wind Localization of fishfarms e.g.

The ferrybox system are operated in the DISMAR project Data transfer by satellite #### #################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################### Color Festival: Oslo - Hirtshals Operated by the Color Line company. Operated 2 times per day. 8 hours travelling (night and day time). Sensors onboard the ship Flow through ferrybox system for temp, salinity, chlorophyll-a fluorescence and turbidity New sensors for above water radiance #### # ############################################################## # ################### Oslo Hirtshals Ferrybox flow through system with PC and internet connection

On-line data from the ferry detects the first algae bloom in winter/spring 18. February March 2004

Lista NORWAY Jomfruland SWEDEN Arenbdal St. 2/3 Oslo DENMARK Oslo Hirtshals Bloom starts Ferrybox data used for studies of phytoplankton blooms in Skagerrak Salinity Chlorophyll-a Fluorescence (mg/m3) Hirsthals High frequency measurements (2 times/24h, night and day) Studying timing and geographic development of a bloom Coupling the bloom to water masses

Ferrybox data on-line in DISPRO

Satellite data overlayed with ferrybox data for direct interpretation of the situation in the area.

Weekly HAB warning based on water samples analysed within hours are made available in DISPRO

The HAB warning are displayed in colour coding in DISPRO to give an easy interpretation of the situation

When satellite data are only partly cloud free the ferrybox data are available

Localization of fish farming can be displayed in DISPRO

The user can zoom into there area of interest

Wind information or other metrological data (forcast, model results) are available as layers in the portal

Web portal for HAB-information at the west coast of Norway The three ferry routes will be implemented in this portal as a part of the SATOCEAN project

The MERIS satellite data will be implemented in the portal

Full zooming capabilities in the portal The need for good regional satellite data is urgent

The user can zoom in to local area

Summary The DISPRO system allows the user to have easy and fast access to satellite and in situ data. The systems allows the user to validate the satellite data if the satellite product give false alarms concerning high alga concentrations and potential HAB The systems can alert for potensial HAB situation and give action on water sampling for HAB identification from the ferrybox system The ferrybox data is easly intergrated and combined with other data sources and HAB warnings have been improved. A portal for covering all the Norwegian coast will be implemented in end of 2005 through the national project SATOCEAN (SATHAV) Visit the DISPRO web site On-line information are found at
