1 Invitation to German-Indonesian Conference on Innovative Technology to Tap Indonesia s Bioenergy Potential Jakarta, 17 th November 2014

2 Background Indonesia is one of the most important economies in South East Asia. Rapid economic growth and increasing domestic demand require a reliable and sustainable energy supply for industry and households. Power generation, however, is heavily dominated by the use of fossil fuels, leading to a strong dependency on fuel imports and to high greenhouse gas emissions. In reaction to a looming electricity shortage, the Indonesian government has, among taking up various measures, pledged to increase the share of new and renewable energy in the country s energy mix from around 6% to 25% in Since several years, the utilization of renewable energy sources, such as biomass is a known practice in Indonesia. However, until now it is mainly realized in the form of smaller projects, mainly used for private needs. Nevertheless, abundant renewable energy sources offer a huge potential for power generation from agricultural waste, also for commercial use. With its strong agroindustry, the country could utilize the residues thereof and benefit from it. Such utilization can give a significant contribution to the country s increasing energy demand and a cleaner environment. To substitute the use of fossile resources with renewable energy resources, the Indonesian government offers financial incentives, such as tax and duty exemptions. The feed in tariff for the power generation from biomass is supposed to boost the use of biomass for the power production. A further increase of the feed in tariff has been published on October 22 nd, Conference Program Hotel InterContinental MidPlaza, Ballroom A Moderator: Mr. Jon Respati Registration Opening and Welcome Opening Remarks: EKONID Mr. Jan Rönnfeld, Managing Director, AHK-Indonesia BMWi Dr. Andreas Kleine German Embassy Jakarta Johannes Kerner, First Secretary for Economic Affairs GIZ Indonesia Mr. Rafael Wiese, Senior Advisor, LCORE GIZ Indonesia Bioenergy policy framework and status quo Bioenergy: Policies and regulations in Indonesia Dr. Ir.
