1 Indus3Es Newsletter Issue n 3 September 2017 Indus3Es Project New technologies for utilization of heat recovery in large industrial systems Enjoy reading the Indus3Es newsletter! Updates on the applications of the project technology by the companies involved: the unique selling point of the Indus3Es AHT The Indus3Es project, started in October 2015, is a Research and Innovation Action funded in the frame of Horizon 2020 TOPIC EE : New technologies for utilization of heat recovery in large industrial systems, considering the whole energy cycle from heat production to transformation, delivery and end use. Large quantities of waste heat are continuously rejected from industries. Most of this waste energy, however, is of low-quality and it is not practical or economical to recover it with current technologies. Indus3Es project aims at developing an Absorption Heat Transformer (AHT) for revalorization of low temperature waste heat from industries, to transform it to high temperature source possible to be reused in the process. Therefore, it will have a relevant impact making possible an energy efficiency increase and reduction of primary energy consumption of most energetic intensive industries in Europe. Several innovations will be implemented in the system after testing, at different scales, different configurations for increasing mass and thermal exchange efficiency while reaching required working conditions. But this is not a one-case project and hence its scalability will be studied for other processes and working conditions. Industrial partners in the project have the interest of evaluating the technology and its applicability (technical and economic feasibility) due to the promising savings that will be obtained. This newsletter presents interviews with these industrial partners in order to show their reasons for joining the consortium and their point of view about the unique selling point, added value and expected benefits in the use of this technology. Why choose the new Indus3Es Absorption Heat Transformer (AHT)? The partner end-users answer! The companies, and are direct beneficiaries and end-users of the developed system. In the following interview, they explain why their company decided to join the project consortium and benefit from the breakthrough innovations developed in the framework of the Indus3Es project. is Turkey s largest industrial enterprise, having four refineries operating in four different cities with 4500 employees. is an integrated global energy company with vast sector experience. They carry out Upstream and Downstream activities across the world. is a company belonging to the business group Tervalis Desarrollo, which is a leader supplier of fertilizers for agriculture in Spain. 2 Q1 Why did your organisation decide to join the Indus3Es project as an end-user? The petroleum refining industry is one of the largest energy consuming industries in the world and energy efficiency has always been one of the hot topics in this sector. Therefore, as, we are seeking for the opportunities to reduce energy consumption while maintaining or enhancing the productivity of the plant. Also, as, our vision includes following and applying innovative applications that will contribute to the refinery sector. With this project, we have had the opportunity to contribute to the implementation and dissemination of an innovative application that would increase energy efficiency., within its Downstream activities, requires a considerable amount of energy for refining crude oils and producing final products. However, part of such energy demand is withdrawn as a low temperature waste heat. Our refineries are intensively heat integrated to a certain temperature, below such, heat is currently no longer usable and needs to be disposed to the atmosphere. In this regard, AHT technology can be of great importance for us since it will allow to recovery the energy we are now disposing. is also very concern about the CO2 footprint of its processes, being Indus3Es system of help in reducing the CO2 emissions of our refineries. At present the competitiveness in the segment of the fertilizers has increased to a great extent. Not only in obtaining more efficient fertilizers but also in making them more environmentally friendly and largely, looking for a reduction in the carbon footprint of fertilizers. For this reason we consider an opportunity to know new technologies to be able to fulfil what the market requires us. The possibility of being able to study and take advantage of many of the resources that we ourselves generate and that today are not used effectively, for us is a great opportunity for improvement. Q2 What is the added-value of implementing the Indus3Es system in your plant? Refinery processes are heat integrated so that heat is exchanged for minimum heat loss. Heat can be recovered till pinch points by using conventional methods. The remaining heat is regarded as waste heat and it is lost. The system developed in our project aims to use that waste heat sources in the process. Thus, processes become more heat intensive and the amount of waste heat is decreased which is beneficial for both process and the environment. The main value of Indus3Es system is that this technology is able to turn something that costs money to the refinery into something that actually worth money. Currently no technology is available (at a reasonable price) to be used in the refineries to recover waste energy below a certain temperature, costing money its disposal to the atmosphere. However, implementing the Indus3Es system in a refinery, such waste energy can be used to enhance its (or other stream) thermal level, being once again of use within our heat integration scheme. The main added value in this project will be the knowledge and analysis of the technology developed in the project to be implemented in the different production plants of. It should be taken into account that in this project is not the plant where the demonstration of the equipment will be carried out, but it will provide a complete study of the possibilities that the technology can provide as well as other options to optimize the costs, through a better use of energy, in the production plants. 3 Q3 What benefits will derive from the implementation of the Indus3Es AHT in your industrial process? For our specific case, we will be recovering a waste heat source, namely low temperature steam, in our energy production unit. In the current application, this steam is directly discharged to the atmosphere. Using Indus3es AHT system, we will be able to utilize this steam to heat up another water stream which is necessary for the process. Indus3Es system can have a triple fold benefit for our refining plants. Not only it can help us to reduce the total energy consumption of the processing units and the costs associated to dispose the low temperature waste heat that cannot be used, but also it will allow us to reduce the CO2 fingerprint of our refineries. This question is difficult to answer yet, but we think that it will be possible to obtain a reduction of costs in the energy section, considerable, but not quantifiable at this moment. Q4 Why other entrepreneurs should choose to introduce the Indus3Es system in their industrial processes? There are many sectors which use energy intense operations in their production processes. The AHT designed in Indus3es is a good alternative for such processes since it has added value compared to conventional heat recovery systems. In addition, waste heat generated by various industries is a major environmental concern since it contributes to global warming. Increasing demands of human kind require massive production systems. The critical point for both old and new technologies is to satisfy this demand without violating the environment. Using and developing such innovative and energy efficient systems, one should not forget that they will contribute both to their own production and to the environment. We would recommend other entrepreneurs to choose it since the Indus3Es system can go beyond the current heat integration technologies. Once the temperature of your waste heat has gone below a certain temperature, it is no longer of use but the Indus3Es system can bring it again on the loop. The market for this type of equipment can be very large. Our opinion is that the Indus3Es system is suitable for any type of company that has the temperature conditions appropriate to the equipment requirements. In this way, the use will be maximised. 4 Q5 In your opinion, which is the unique selling point of the new technology? By using AHTs in energy intensive industries, the environmental footprint of the products and the manufacturing costs of energy can be reduced. From technical point of view, higher temperatures can be achieved with AHTs compared to the conventional heat pumps. From economic point of view, together with Indus3Es project, their TRL will increase and the implementation cost will be optimized. Therefore, compared to the recently commercialized new technologies they will be relatively cheaper to implement. From technological, economic and environmental aspects, this innovative solution for the recovery of waste heat can increase the competitiveness of any product requiring energy intensive processes. Its capability to turn something that costs money (low temperature waste heat) into something that actually worth money (enhancing the waste heat thermal level) Its adaptability, since boiler sellers, cold store sellers and research centres can participate together in developing the equipment according to the needs of the end customer.
