1 Coasts and Rivers Gateway to Gateway to solutions

2 Coastal zone and river basin management More than 60% of the world s population lives in coastal areas, which are densely populated, fertile and have high economic activity. These areas face constant dilemmas between the need to preserve the natural environment and the many interests that drive coastal development, such as industry, housing, shipping and recreation. Managing conflicting interests is also a key to river basin management. Changes and their impact on the different river functions have to be anticipated. At the same time ecological needs must be taken into account. DHV has developed a strong track-record in putting integrated approaches into practice. This is demonstrated by our leading position in the Room for the River projects and various coastal management programs in the Netherlands. Our skills and expertise are brought to major projects worldwide, such as the Yellow and Yangtze River Basin Management Program (China) and the Caspian Environment Program. We stand for delivering innovative and sustainable solutions. DHV has developed a strong track-record in putting integrated approaches into practice

3 Flood risk management Over the past few decades, flood protection has become increasingly important. DHV is deeply engaged in current efforts to bring flood defenses up to required safety levels. In addition to comprehensive programs in the Netherlands, we are involved in a large number of international projects, such as New Orleans, Aceh and Bangladesh. Flood management is closely connected to spatial planning and area development, fields in which DHV leads. Flood risk management has evolved from traditional flood protection, which focuses on site-specific structural measures, to catchment-scale, integrated, flood risk management. DHV provides advice at regional, national and international levels on the entire range of flood management issues; from institutional and legislative policy formulation and planning, to designing and implementing largescale, complex flood protection measures. River and coastal engineering The complexity of river and coastal engineering projects calls for an integrated approach. All aspects must be covered; from construction engineering and design, to the socio-economic impact. DHV is involved in river engineering projects and studies for river training works, river bank protection, river widening and deepening, dredging projects for navigation purposes, ship locks, river regulation works, hydro power, river waterfront development and rehabilitation of natural floodplains and river habitats. Our coastal engineering projects and studies include structural and nonstructural solutions (Nature Driven Design), coastal protection, offshore land reclamation, beach nourishment by dredging, closure of estuaries or lagoons, breakwaters, ports, access channels and coastal waterfront development. DHV provides advice for the complete range of river and coastal projects: from site selection and feasibility studies, to the structural design and implementation of large-scale complex works. Our knowledge and experience are essential success factors, particularly when projects demand creative and unorthodox solutions

4 Land reclamation and dredging DHV has extensive experience in land reclamation and dredging, which has been acquired on projects all over the world. This includes creating solutions for contaminated disposal sites. Our knowledge and experience have proven to be essential success factors, particularly when projects demand creative and unorthodox solutions. Land reclamation and dredging are often components of large multidisciplinary projects. These projects require input from a variety of specialties; such as land development, infrastructure, geotechnics, environment, ecology, flood protection and coastal zone management. Thanks to the wide range of in-house expertise, we are able to meet these specific requirements. Our experience encompasses all process and project phases: initiation, feasibility studies, engineering design, tender, construction, site supervision, contract management, maintenance and rehabilitation. We have extensive experience, which has been acquired on projects all over the world
