European Solar Prize 2007 Category A: Cities, municipalities or municipal services. Project title: Thisted municipality. For nomination at the Jury session in Bonn Germany 31. August 2007 Thisted municipality is almost 100% self-sufficient with renewable energy.

Thisted municipality Thisted municipality is at km 2, has about inhabitants and use renewable energy from windmills, biogas, biomass, plant oil, geothermic and the sun. Heating: Thisted, the main town and the other smaller towns in the municipality all have 100% district heating using biomass. Wind energy covers almost 70% of the need for electricity. There are has several combined heating and power plants that makes the municipality self-supplying with electricity.

The municipality is also leading in the use of geothermal heating. It was the first plant of its kind in Denmark. The combined power and heating plants also use other forms of renewable energy e.g. biomass such as straw, wood pellets, wood chips and waste material. The major towns in the municipality are all covered by local heating suppliers, which use renewable energy sources. In total comes as much as 82% of the heating from renewable energy.

Strong local support There is a local support for renewable energy which is proved by the local ownership of windmills and that several farmers have biogas plants. All the CHP plants are not-for-profit consumer owned.

Electricity supply from windmills 1: The new Thisted municipality has today in total 252 windmills with an installed capacity of 103 GW. Each windmill is in average at 409 kw. The total production from the 252 windmills was in 2006 at 212 GWh which covers 68% of the electricity consumed in Thisted municipality. Since 1997 the Sydthy municipality, which now after a municipal reform is a part of Thisted municipality, has been more than 100% selfsufficient with electricity from windmills.

Electricity supply from windmills 2: Another unique aspect about the windmills in Thisted municipality is the fact that all of the windmills were locally owned. The windmills were locally owned so the economic benefits remains in the local community. This stimulates the local economy. The renewables give jobs to a considerable number of people and provide local acceptance of wind power. In the region no NIMBY effect has been registered until recently.

Local companies within RE: The transformation to renewable energy had another impact on the local economy in the form of several new local industries: Bach composite, main supplier of nacelles for Vestas Cimbria SKET, leading producer of presses for treatment of oil seeds Several sub-suppliers for the wind mill industry

Transportation: There are about private vehicles in Thisted municipality, driving km at 10 km/l at 10 kwh/l. If these were replaced by electric cars which are at least 3 times as efficient as the average car, it would require 90 GWh electricity from 21 additional 2 MW turbines, which should be compared to the fact that there already are 252 windmills in the area.

Less CO 2 emissions: Every Dane has a CO 2 emission of 10 ton per year. Heating is responsible for 1,59 ton and electricity 0,95 ton per year. This reduce the annual CO 2 emissions with tons ( * 1,59 * 0,82) and tons ( * 0,95 * 0,68). In total less.

Future developments Recently there has been presented plans about integrating all the local autonomous energy plants in Thisted municipality in one integrated autonomous system. This plan suggests that new additional wind power capacity peaks will be used for district heating.

Future developments A further development of wind power will make wind power the primary source of electricity and heating. When there is a local surplus of wind electricity this will be used in combined heating and power plants and replace biomass and natural gas. Biomass will in this way be back-up storage when wind- and solar energy is not sufficient to cover the need for electricity and heating.

Environmental results for Thisted municipality: 68% of the electricity consume is covered by windmills About 82% of all heating is coming from renewable energy sources CO 2 emissions saved: almost tons per year Companies and jobs created within the renewable energy sector
