Water, Sewage and Waste Technology Develop and apply knowledge to improve municipal water and sewage handling. Focus on treatment methods combined with recovery of resources. Senior sicentists * Elzbieta Plaza, Professor * Erik Levlin, Docent (associate professor) * Jozef Trela, PhD PhD students Post docs

Anammox process for nitrogen removal - Reject water - Main stream Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Swedish wastewater and sewage sludge management Increased efficiency of biogas production Biogas production from fish waste Future Wastewater Treatment

4 Save energy costs! No addition of C source! O 2 NO 3 -N C org NO 2 -N O 2 NH 2 OH N 2 H 4 NH 3 N 2 Nitritation Nitrification Nitratation Denitrification Anammox Anaerobic ammonium oxidation Partial nitrification/anammox

Since 2008 pilot plants at Hammarby Sjöstadsverk Control and optimization of the process Aeration strategies KTH, IVL

UASB Upstream Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactor Pilot 1 - After anaerobic organics removal by UASB reactor. (25 C, N mg/l) KTH, Chalmers, IVL, GU Pilot 2 - At low temperatures and low concentrations (15-17 C, N 45 mg/l)

Provide new knowledge on the green house gas (GHG) emissions from wastewater and sludge processes. Provide good decision support on suitable combinations and operation for such processes to minimize GHG emissions. Monitoring N 2 O emissions in the Anammox pilot showed that 0.4 2% of nitrogen load was converted into N 2 O. SLU, KTH, IVL, JTI

Through dewatering and recycling of digested sludge. Ordinary digestion HRT = SRT HRT is Hydraulic retention time SRT is Sludge retention time Degree of digestion Digestor 22 % System 79 % (Henriksdal WWTP: 50 %) Improved digestion HRT < SRT HRT determines reactor volume SRT determines biogas production IVL, KTH HRT Hydraulic retention time 10.6 days SRT Sludge retention time 218 days (Henriksdal WWTP SRT=HRT 20 days)

Anaerobic processes UASB Upstream Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactor Used in Anammox project Sludge digestors Used in Increased biogas project

Find optimal co-digestion substrates to enhance biogas production from fish wastes. IVL, KTH AMTPS II Automatic Methane Potential Test System
