Our ambition The future of the energy transition will be formed by the ability to provide effective climate protection and a secure and stable energy supply in combination with an operating market. The ability to inform and involve the public plays a major role for the energy transition. NEW 4.0 intends to demonstrate this ability. 2

Transformation of the Energy System Goals 2035: Sustainable regenerative energy supply in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg Reliable, cost efficient, environmentally friendly supply of energy till 2035 Conditions: security of supply, system stability Market economy and market competition social acceptance De-carbonisation, reducing CO₂ emissions Effects: Providing incentives for innovations, new technologies, new markets and value chains, strengthening competitiveness, social acceptance and feasibility of the energy transition 3

Energy situation of the Hamburg /Schleswig-Holstein region 4.5 Mio. residents Schleswig-Holstein as a region of production, Hamburg as region of consumption, RES installed, 9 GW Interconnector: Energy hub north-europe: Southlink, northlink, west-coast-link, offshore windfarms Industry hub in Hamburg, huge potential of flexibilization Disparities: extreme and increasing disparities between production and load needs to be managed. Wind energy production will be quadrupled by 2035, three times more compared to electricity demand x4 The model region provides the main challenges of the energy transition representatively 5

[TWh] [Mio. ] Expenses through system-stabilizing measures Development in the model region: Strong increase of feed-in management on RE electricity System-stabilizing measures in 2016 (only Schleswig-H.): Down-regulated electricity: 2.7 TWh/1900 hours Ratio of RE-electricity: 14 % Claims for compensation: 273 mio. 3,00 2, System management: About 200 mio. /year 1, Total cost : Approx. 500 mio. each year about 2 billion during project term 0, Regulation RE electricity in SH Claims for compensation 0 Aim: Avoiding feed-in management, reduction of economic costs, exploitation of locally produced energy 6

Dual strategy of NEW 4.0 NEW 4.0 solves the main challenges of the energy transition with a dual strategy: increase electricity export into other regions through the efficient use and development of the energy infrastructure in the region + increase local energy-self-utilization introducing flexibility measurements and sector coupling converting power in other energy forms (heat, mobility, hydrogen) Intelligent Information- and Communication Technology (ICT) battery-, high-temperature-, storage, virtual power plants, market platforms + power-to-heat, power-to-gas, CHP, power-to-steel, power-to-steam 7

Fields of activities for climate strategies in the area Coupling of all life areas with RE Heating households Kiel Transportation & Logistics Electricity sector Gas H 2 O - + H 2 Governmental institutions Industry Agriculture Trade 8
