4 Major research trends of the Karelian Research Centre of RAS Investigations into BIORESOURCE POTENTIAL of forest and mire ecosystems, development of methods for sustainable comprehensive utilization of forests in Eastern Fennoscandia, and promotion of their productivity and influence on biosphere Study and elaboration of biological basics for the development, reconstruction and protection of the FLORA AND FAUNA, mires and soil cover in Karelia and adjacent territories. Study of physiological basics of PLANT AND ANIMAL RESISTANCE and productivity, and determination of genotype response to changing environment Study of water regime, surface and ground WATER RESOURCES, their sane use and protection. 6 Intersectoral approach in sustainable development of the Northern territories Non-profit Partnership Centre for Problems of the North, Arctic and Crossborder Cooperation An instrument to generate the basis for development and establishment of new mechanism of network cooperation aimed at support, coordination and promotion of the efficiency of scientific, educational, non-governmental, youth, political and commercial organizations and bodies in their activities dealing with topical problems of the North, the Arctic and border regions established in May 2009 in Petrozavodsk 6

8 Project objective: KarRC of RAS s projects in green economy (1) Green cities and settlements to enhance the competitive capacity of and living standards in remote border areas through introduction of new approaches to spatial planning based on efficient utilization of the local potential and environment friendly technologies 8

9 KarRC of RAS s projects in green economy(2) Cities by the water Project objective: To elaborate integrated solutions in territorial development in the cities of Joensuu, Kitee, Petrozavodsk, and Sortavala, which would combine business support and spatial planning 9

10 KarRC of RAS s projects in green economy (3) Contemporary old cities Project objective: To create permanent means to develop and market the North Karelia and Republic of Karelia regions and the cities of Joensuu and Petrozavodsk as culturally attractive tourist destination for tourists within the area and from outside 10

11 KarRC of RAS s projects in green economy (4) Eco-efficient tourism Overall objective: Making Euregio Karelia more attractive for tourists through gradual leveling of the quality of services provided to tourists on the two sides of the border Specific objectives: Promoting introduction of eco-efficient technologies of recreational area management and improving the quality of services Making pilot areas more comfortable, safe and environmentally friendly & known for these features Improving cross-border tourism transboundary practices and regional development co-operation 11

12 KarRC of RAS s projects in green economy(5) AQUAREL Aquatic resources for green energy realisation To develop and introduce an innovative and efficient concept for green energy production and recycling of bio-waste to fish farms and other local actors in the Karelia ENPI programme area. The concept will include both technical and economical solutions for green energy production and for needed investments To significantly reduce the environmental impact caused by bio waste disposal To initiate an ideological change in the way bio-waste is perceived amongst local entrepreneurs i.e. to view bio-waste as a valuable commodity 12

13 KarRC of RAS s projects in green economy(6) Clean Ladoga Overall objective: Reduction of negative anthropogenic impact on the ecosystem of Ladoga Lake Specific objective: Improvement of water resources management and utilization in the Northern Ladoga region Main outputs : Full information, maps and data on current condition of Northern Ladoga ecosystem obtained Recommendations and pre-investment measures developed and handed over to local and regional stakeholders Pilot infrastructural project is implemented New technologies and knowledge in the field of sustainable natural resources management are obtained by local and regional organizations and experts 13

14 KarRC of RAS s projects in green economy (7) Development of cross-border biofuel infrastructure Overall objective: Increasing the share of local renewable resources in respective municipal fuel and energy balances, abandon the consumption of imported and costly fossil fuels and by thus improving the cross-border environmental situation. Development of the local biofuel production infrastructure in Kostomuksha, Kalevala and Muezerka municipalities by adopting relevant Finnish experiences, technologies and knowledge and with the view of potential conversion of local boiler plants to domestically available biofuel resources. Specific objective: Cross-border strategy for cost-effective production, transportation, storage and final utilization of available biofuel resources is developed for the bordering regions of Karelia and Finland. 14

Intellectually driven management of natural resources of Green Belt of Fennoscandia Objectives To contribute to socio-economic development of GBF by creating the system of sustainable use and enhanced reproduction of natural resources (game animals and commercial fish populations) and mechanisms for their further economic utilization Specific objectives Development of hunting and fishing in pilot areas on both sides of the border; Delineation of transboundary ecological corridors - natural plant and animal migration pathways, and their withdrawal from economic activities and hunting; Enhancing the efficiency of utilization of the potential of the natural ecosystems of PAs through promotion of scientific and learning tourism; Assessment and development of the resource-recreational potential and corresponding infrastructure improvement. 15

16 «Green Belt of Fennoscandia» Umbrella programmes Organization of a single ecological-economic space to preserve the unique nature of the North and develop territories with regard to their historical and cultural potential «Harmony of the North» finding solutions for sustainable development and harmonious interactions between man and environment in the North. Special focus is on advancement and utilization of the human creative potential, support to young researchers, youth creativity groups, and their mentors 16
