2 Achieving Sustainable Development through Sustainable Water Management World Water Day is marked on 22 March each year. It s a day to celebrate water, to make a difference to those who suffer from water related issues, and to prepare for how we manage water in the future. In 2015, the theme for World Water Day is Water and Sustainable Development is a significant year for sustainable development in the Pacific. It is the year in which the region joins the rest of the world to assess progress towards the Millennium Development Goals agreed in 2000, and agree on a future global framework and targets for sustainable development, including ambitious targets for universal access to safe water and sanitation is also the European Union Year for Development, intended to inspire greater engagement and involvement in global development, and reconfirming Europe s commitment to eradicating poverty worldwide. Across the Pacific, the European Union is partnering with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and Pacific Island Countries and Territories to support sustainable development by helping secure safe and sustainable drinking water and sanitation for all, in all conditions. The photographs used in this calendar were taken by staff of SPC s Water and Sanitation Programme, and showcase just some of the past and current activities undertaken in partnership with our member Countries and Territories and the European Union. The SPC Water and Sanitation Programme works across the region to assist member countries and territories to: monitor, assess and manage their fresh water resources; improve access to safe drinking-water and sanitation facilities; and better manage vulnerability and risks. The Pacific Community has 26 members: American Samoa, Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, France, French Polynesia, Guam, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Pitcairn Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, United States of America, Vanuatu, and Wallis and Futuna.
