1 COST is supported by the EU RTD Framework programme Cost Action 637 meteau METALS AND RELATED SUBSTANCES IN DRINKING WATER About COST 4th International Conference COST Action 637 Kristianstad, Sweden October 13 15, 2010 COST is an intergovernmental framework, founded in 1971, for European Cooperation in Science and Technology, allowing the coordination of nationally funded research on a European level. COST contributes to reducing the fragmentation in European research investments and opening the European Research Area to cooperation worldwide. The goal of COST is to ensure that Europe holds a strong position in the field of scientific and technical research for peaceful purposes, by increasing European cooperation and interaction in this field. This research initiative makes it possible for the various national facilities, institutes, universities and private industry to work jointly on a wide range of Research and Development (R&D) activities. COST Action 637 METEAU Metals and Related Substances in Drinking Water The main objective of the Action is to stimulate better control of metals and related substances in drinking water and to minimise environmental impacts. Major objectives To provide an on going forum for knowledge exchange in connection with metals and related substances in drinking water. To promote good practice in the control of metals and related substances in drinking water. To more critically determine the environmental and socio economic impacts of control measures through the sharing of practitioner experience. 3 Sponsor of the Conference The Øresund Region The Municipality of Kristianstad is part of the Øresund Region, one of the most rapidly expanding regions in Northern Europe. By train or by car you can go across the Øresund Bridge to Copenhagen and Kastrup International Airport in less than 2 hours. The city of Kristianstad Kristianstad was founded on 22 May 1614 by the Danish King Christian IV. At the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, Skåne and, as a result, Kristianstad was handed over to Sweden. The C4 symbol is still used in many different contexts to represent Kristianstad. The streets in the old fortress town still follow the original seventeenth century layout. The moats and other fortifications from the Danish period have long since vanished. Many of the moats gradually became tree lined boulevards, while the surrounding marshes were drained and used as building plots. The municipality has about 77,000 inhabitants and it covers an area of around 1,300 sq.kms. Since parts of the city are situated 2 m below the sea level, floods threat the city. Thus, the flood in 2002 almost reached the central city (see picture above). Every day, everyone in Sweden eats or drinks something from the Municipality of Kristianstad. Drinking water in mineral balance The drinking water of Kristianstad is mineral rich and has relatively high levels of nutrient elements like calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate, and very low levels of toxic metals like cadmium, uranium and lead. The groundwater is abstracted from aquifers at depths of 100 m beneath limestone cliff. The only treatment method used for the water is aeration followed by sand filter, where dihydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is degassed and iron and manganese are precipitated on sand grains Typical concentrations of some elements and ions in the Kristianstad drinking water ph EC TH HCO 3 Ca Mg Fe F µs/cm o dh mg/l <

5 Conference location, Hotel, and place for Gala Dinner The Conference location is KRINOVA Science Park, close to Kristianstad University. The Gala Dinner is at Bäckaskog Castle, where the oldest parts originate from the early middle ages. Grand Hotel will host most of the participants in the conference. The haunted Bäckaskog Castle, place for gala dinner and the Grand Hotel Krinova Science Park, Conference Center Conference Venue Sponsor of the Conference What is Region Skåne? At the southernmost tip of Sweden lies Skåne. It is province, a county and a region. As a province it borders on its peers Halland, Småland and Blekinge, as well as Denmark, Germany, Poland and the Baltic States albeit with some water between. Skåne is also a county governed by a county council, which in Skåne's case is called Region Skåne. The county assembly is the highest political body in the region and its members are elected by the Scanians themselves. Many equate a county council with health care and Region Skåne is no exception. However, together with three other trial regions, it also has responsibility for development within its area. This responsibility extends up to and including 2010 and means that the county itself coordinates development of commerce, communication, culture and collaboration with other regions both in and outside of Sweden
