Organised by: System and Integration Aspects of Biomass-based Gasification Workshop November 19-20, 2013 IEA, Bioenergy Task 33 IEA, Industrial Energy Related Technologies and Systems, Annex 11 Aims This workshop aims to initiate a dialogue across the technology/ system interface, as well as on methods and results for technical, economic and environmental evaluations of integrated biomass-based gasification systems. The other aim is to identify topics for further international cooperation in these areas.

Sessions Registration and opening session Biomass gasification into syngas Part 1; Upstream and internal integration Biomass gasification into syngas Part 2; Downstream and product integration Biomass gasification to fuel gas; Integration into power and CHP utilities Analyses of techno-economic performance and climate impact

Industrial Energy-Related Technologies and Systems An Implementing Agreement established under the auspices of the International Energy Agency

What is the IEA? The International Energy Agency (IEA) was founded by the OECD countries in 1974 to reduce dependence on imported oil. The shared goals of IEA members today are energy security, economic growth and environmental protection. Energy technology innovation and widespread deployment of more economical and environmentally benign technologies are central parts of the IEA s work. For more information about the IEA:

What is an IEA Implementing Agreement? IEA Implementing Agreements offer the framework for collaborative projects on energy research, development and demonstration. Interested countries join together to study applications of existing technologies, research new technologies, coordinate national research programs, and share information. There are 40 Implementing Agreements targeting different perspectives in areas of like Bioenergy, Transportation, Greenhouse gas, Wind- and Solar Energy, Nuclear technology, and much more For more information about the IEA:

The IETS Implementing Agreement The IETS is an Implementing Agreement under the IEA, focusing on energy efficient industrial technologies and systems. IETS was established in 2005 as the result of merging, revamping and extending activities formerly carried out by separate industrial IEA Programs. IETS currently has 8 member countries: Belgium, Denmark, Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and USA. For more information about IETS:

The IETS Annexes The core of the IETS activities is carried out in so called Annexes. Current on-going Annexes include: Annex IX - Energy Efficient Separation Technologies Systems Annex XI - Industry-based Biorefineries Annex XII - Membranes as energy-efficient technologies for Separation of Hydrocarbons Annex XIII - Industrial Heat Pumps Annex XIV - Process integration in the iron and steel industry Annex XV - Industrial Excess Heat Recovery Annex XVI - Energy Efficiency in SME s For more information about IETS:

New initiatives 2013 Ideas and proposals for new Annexes or activities: Cement industry Process Integration Methodology LCA - Linking energy and environmental aspects through LCA and ELCA (Exergetic Life Cycle Analysis) approaches The ISO standard for Energy management systems Requirements with guidance for use - how can it help to improve energy efficiency in industry? Other activities planned: Joint workshop between Annex XI Industry-based Biorefineries, Task 4, and IEA Bioenergy Implementing Agreement, Task 33 on Thermal Gasification of Biomass Joint workshop on Carbon Capture Storage, CCS, between Annex XI and Implementing Agreement IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme (IEAGHG)
