Bram is respnsible fr prject chices, creating a netwrk and finding partners fr the develpment rutes that fit the strategy f Wyd NBD. The main fcus f Wyd NBD is n prjects clustered arund UV technlgy and s called Safe Paints in which the aim is t use nn-hazardus and bibased raw materials fr making high quality paints. In shrt, bringing innvatin t practise requires change larger than just the prduct develpment. The new setup enables Van Wijhe t imprve and ptimise its existing prtfli and via Wyd NBD maximum flexibility is given t shape New Businesses that are different. Bram Fieten has a backgrund in Chemical Engineering and had his first jb at DSM Cmpsite Resins. After 7 years in several psitins he mved t a prject in China where in cperatin with BUEFA the industrial glue prtfli was intrduced, that fr example was used in the windmill industry. After finishing this prject he jined Van Wijhe t realize the New Business ambitins. Abstract: Van Wijhe Verf has the ambitin the be frntrunner in the use f bibased raw materials fr catings. The initial step was in 2013 by intrducing an interir wall paint based n starch technlgy. T g further n this rute, increasing bibased cntents with high quality perfrmance the challenge is nt nly technlgy, but als scale and definitin. When using a bibased surce, pssible scale and effect f such scale shuld be taken int accunt. This makes the BPM Methafrm prject an imprtant pprtunity fr taking next steps in bibased raw materials. The first evaluated lab samples shw prmising results with significant bibased cntent. Having the flexibility f Wyd NBD n the side make that we are ptimistic n the change f success fr this prject. 1/1

8 Methafrm prject - backgrund Acrylate and methacrylate esters are imprtant mnmers fr the catings and adhesives industry. Plyacrylate plymers are an essential ingredient in many f the current water brne catings and paint frmulatins, including wall paints. The intrductin f water brne paints has led t a vast reductin in VOC (vlatile rganic cmpnents) emissins. Nevertheless, acrylate binders are still prduced frm petrchemical feedstcks. Hence, there is a grwing demand fr bibased acrylate resins that cmbine the envirnmental benefits f water brne catings, with the use f sustainable, renewable feedstcks. 7

9 Methafrm prject - apprach Archer Daniels Midland Cmpany (ADM) has supplied cnsrtium partners with itacnic acid and alchls, btained by fermentatin f sugars. ADM and WFBR have generated new insights in the reactin mechanisms fr cnverting itacnic acid int methacrylic acid under green chemistry cnditins. As a result the use f expensive and scarce nble metal catalysts is n lnger required. Furthermre WFBR is successfully develping new chem-catalytic rutes fr the selective cnversin f citric acid tt itacnicacid under mild cnditins. 8

10 Methafrm prject - apprach WFBR has synthesized a range f itacnicacid esters n bench scale, which made it pssible t prduce a brad range f itacnic acid based emulsin plymers. This has generated a new tlbx fr prducing latexes with specific prperties. Van WijheVerf is evaluating these new bibased resins in their water brne prducts and systems. Furthermre, EOC Belgium is evaluating bibased itacnic acid btained frm fermentatin in emulsin plymerizatin, with the aim t prduce resins fr water brne cating system. Frmulatin 9
