2 In the rugged, uncompromising world of mining there exists a set of rules and standards which every serious manufacturer and supplier to the industry has come to respect. DPI Plastics as a market leader has through innovation and technology met the challenge by supplying millions of metres of upvc pipe to a very demanding industry over almost two decades. Heat and corrosion in underground mining are vital environmental issues which weigh heavily on mining productivity and on the quality of life and safety at the work face. These issues are efficiently and economically addressed by the inherent thermal and physical properties of Mineflo upvc pipe systems. MINING PRODUCT RANGE MINEFLO PIPES AND FITTINGS The Mineflo product range consists of Mineflo, Backflo, Ice Blue, Drainflo, Backflo, Airflo, and Mineflo ISO, which are products produced in high impact upvc and designed to provide optimum performance under demanding mining conditions. The Mineflo product range is produced in accordance with the requirements of SABS 1283 specification for upvc pipe for cold water services in underground mining. RANGE OF PIPES AND PRESSURE RATING Pipes supplied in standard 6,1 metre lengths, complete with Minelok stub ends. For water pipe 1

4 MINELOK STUB ENDS Minelok stub ends are the key to the integration of plastics with steel pipe systems. The Minelok stub end is a cast SG iron pipe fitting which is available as a standard "Victaulic" stub end. The coupling is zinc coated to provide additional protection against corrosion. Minelok stub ends are supplied factory fitted to the pipe. The concept of immediate installation of pipe using cast iron ends without welding is unique to Minelok and is achieved by a mechanical interference bond between the cast iron stub end and upvc pipe. Serrated teeth on the inner surface of the stub end bond firmly to the pipe and provide a watertight seal. Pipes and fittings are then coupled using the standard mining cast iron clamp. The pipe system is ready for immediate operation. Mineflo and Airflo upvc pipe with Minlok stub end Minelok coupling using a standard clamp MINEFLO PRODUCT RANGE APPLICATION - ADVANTAGES COMMON TO ALL DPI PLASTICS PIPE SYSTEMS NO CORROSION Mineflo product range does not corrode in acid water and is unaffected by electrolytic corrosion or alkalis found in underground mining conditions SMOOTH BORE The smooth bore of the Mineflo product range ensures high flow rates at low friction levels throughout the operating life of the system. The smooth pipe wall is resistant to the build up of salt deposits and is also highly resistant to abrasion. FLEXIBILITY A high degree of flexibility enables the Mineflo product range to follow curves in haulage ways without the use of additional fittings. LOW MASS The mass of the Mineflo product range is much lower than steel pipe. The product is robust and easy to handle and contributes significantly to higher rates of installation, quicker repair, maintenance and higher productivity. FLAMMABILITY The performance of upvc (rigid PVC) in fire situations, is such that, when exposed to a heat source from other burning materials, it will decompose in the area in direct contact with the heat source. Once the heat source is removed, the decomposition will immediately cease. In effect therefore, there will be no propagation of the fire. IMPACT RESISTANCE The Mineflo product range is designed to resist impact damage. Achieving the optimum life and service from a pipeline depends upon design and upon the correct handling and installation of the system. Smoke densities and the volume of toxic gas is dependent upon the total amount of upvc present in the fire situation and the volume of air through which combustion products may dissipate. The combustion products of the Mineflo product range do not include phosgene. Additional supporting literature is available on request. 3

5 CODES OF PRACTICE REPAIR COUPLING ASSEMBLY SEQUENCE 1. Components of repair coupling 2. Cut the pipe square 3. Slide toothed ring over pipe. Slide shouldered end onto pipe-flush with pipe end. Locate clamp over toothed ring and shouldered end. Ensure the O'Ring is in place 4. Bolt two clamp halves together-fully tighten The O'Ring will ensure a water tight seal. 5. Make sure the pipe end is flush with shouldered end. STORAGE The SABS specification caters for the effect of solar radiation on upvc pipe based on its resistance to impact after exposure for a given period. Prolonged exposure to solar radiation should be avoided. Pipes must be stored under cover or in pipe racks which provide continuous support along the full length of the pipe. Stacking height should not exceed 1,0m. Specialised crating on request. Stacking height should not exceed 2.5 metres. SUPPORT The Mineflo product range must be supported every 2 metres. (One support on either side of a coupling or fitting about 1 metre apart and one support in the centre of the pipe line). Ideal methods of support include: metal 'S' hooks, chain and steel spreader bars. Valves and fittings require additional support to avoid placing the pipeline under stress. Avoid installing the pipeline in direct contact with the rockface and minimise where possible any external abrasion on the pipe surface. The Mineflo product range possesses a degree of flexibility which allows pipe installations to follow the curves in a haulage way without the use of additional fittings. The maximum radius of curvature must not exceed the radii given below: Pipe diameter mm Minimum Radius of Curvature in m
