Key USFWS Partnership Actions Developing Harvest Strategies and Tools Mass Harvest Techniques and Gear Barrier Defense Using Novel Gear Asian Carp Population Model Developing Prevention and Control Actions Barge Entrainment Field Studies Addressing Black and Grass Carp Collaborative Black Carp Detection/Control Supporting State-led Grass Carp Efforts in Great Lakes Great Lakes Asian Carp Surveillance Program

Traditional Gear and edna Regional Surveillance Program: Early Detection of Bighead and Silver Carp DNA 2017 Great Lakes: 5,332 edna samples total Lake Erie: 2,522 Lake Michigan: 1,980 CAWS: 520 Lake Huron: 200 Lake Superior: 110 No positive detections in 2017!

USFWS Support: Grass Carp Response $10,400,000 is for controlling Asian carp in the Mississippi and Ohio River Basins and preventing them from entering and establishing in the Great Lakes, including $2,000,000 to expand and perfect the combined use of contract fishing and deterrents to extirpate Asian carp, including Grass Carp, where already established; Support for State/Federal Grass Carp management in Lake Erie Deployment of acoustic deterrents at strategic choke points Expansion of contract fishing in the ORB and UMRB Grass Carp monitoring in Lake Erie, Credit: ODNR

Grass Carp Response U.S. and Canadian State, Provincial and Federal resource agencies, and universities Primary focus = Lake Erie (western basin) Science and strategy used to guide control actions USGS: Key research on status, spawning locations/times, and habitat use OH and MI: Leadership on State-led interagency response operations/strategic planning USFWS: Expertise on edna, ploidy, and on-the-water field support OMNRF and DFO-Canada: Key Canadian partners

Lacey Act Update D.C. Circuit (April 7, 2017) ruled that the statute does not prohibit transport of injurious wildlife between States within the continental U.S. Import of injurious wildlife into the United States remains prohibited. What does this mean for the Great Lakes basin? Black Carp Photo: Jeff Ritter

2017 and 2018 MRP Detection Determine the distribution and abundance of Asian carp to guide response and control actions Management and Control Prevent upstream passage of Asian carp towards Lake Michigan via use of barriers, mass removal, and understanding best methods for preventing passage Response Establish comprehensive procedures for responding to changes in Asian carp population status, test these procedures through exercises, and implement if necessary

2017 Highlights One Silver Carp was captured above the Electric Dispersal Barrier in the Little Calumet River in 2017 No small (< 6 inches) Asian carp were captured upstream of Peoria Pool in 2017 Over 6,300,000 lbs of Asian carp have been removed in IWW 90,469 Bighead Carp, 681,743 Silver Carp, and 4,668 Grass Carp Improved efficiencies and methods contribute to increased catches Vigilance by law enforcement to ensure facilities and trucks are free of live Asian carp Silver Carp captured from below TJ O Brien LD, June 2017
