A welldesigned system can result in improvements in patient experience & outcomes, increases in caregiver & staff productivity, and significant reductions in energy consumption and maintenance burden of the campus. This presentation describes the key criteria in evaluating, selecting, and specifying lighting systems across a range of healthcare applications. 2 THURSDAY 10/2 10:30AM Light the Way to LEEDv4 Jim Yorgey, Lutron How Light Control helps achieve LEED Certification in New Construction & Major Renovation in Commercial Buildings By reviewing LEED, the participant will be able to describe the LEED green building rating system for commercial buildings By comparing the previous version of LEED (2.2) with the most recent one (2009), the participant will be able to explain the key changes in LEED 2009 that affect the design and constructioin, or major renovation, of commercial buildings Using the LEED green building rating system, the participant will be able to assess how light controls and their manufacturer can effectively contribute to LEED certification in new construction and major renovation projects Through examination of the provided case study, the participant will be able to summarize how the Plaza at PPL Center used lighting controls to meet LEED certification objectives Custom Decorative Collette Flemming, Winona Custom Custom Decorative The objectives of the presentation are to identify when it is appropriate to specify standard vs. custom luminaires, understand the reasons to choose custom decorative luminaires, to provide an overview of the custom design process, and to identify lighting tips to assist in the specification of these luminaires. The presentation also briefly touches on restoration and reproduction of historical luminaires. Controlling LEDs Craig Fox, LC IES ETC Architectural Regional Manager There is a reoccurring question in the lighting industry about controlling LED lighting. This course will address the wide variety of available control options for LED lighting. It is intended for engineers, lighting designers and architects who are tasked with understanding and specifying control systems for this aspect of commercial lighting. Provide a brief history of the LED Describe the advantages and disadvantages of the LED as well as its various applications Identify the basic components of an LED lighting control systems Discuss the control options for various LED systems

3 THURSDAY 10/2 1:30PM Light, Dark, Color and Human Health Comparative Evaluation of Side-Daylighting Strategies How LED s have Changed the way we work with Light Dean Brockob, USAI LIGHTING Michael Holtz, Lightlouver Pete Neal, Regional Sales Manager Midwest - Lumenpulse Architectural : Light is used to highlight the aesthetics of a space with care given to visual comfort and visual performance needs. Light also affects human health. It is a stimulus for regulating circadian rhythms, behavior, and other health functions. This presentation highlights the growing body of research connecting light, the receptors in our eye (the non-visual system) to many health functions. These human health aspects include circadian regulation, melatonin production, and neurotransmitter functions in the brain. As lighting technology improves (with color temperature control, for example) and as the understanding of light and health improves, this will have a profound effect on architectural lighting design. This course will show recent beta-test lighting projects promoting human centric lighting, as well as recent lighting projects where color control was used for promoting health, behavior, or productivity. Daylighting is the purposeful use of sunlight to meet the illumination requirements of an architectural space. Side lighting strategies are discussed to help a designer meet these requirements. This course will explore what makes LEDs unlike traditional light sources, specifically in regards to their micro optics, miniature size, light quality, precise controls, versatility and long lifespan. LEDs are in fact so different, the technology has opened up entirely new approaches to using light for architectural lighting, both inside and out. Today, LEDs can be used for almost all architectural lighting. This course will examine common LED lighting applications and introduce a variety of installations. The current industry is only scratching the surface of what LEDs can do and building professional must rethink how to approach lighting a space. Participants will learn the basics of the visual system as well as important metrics such as color temperature and color rendering index. Participants will understand the amazing new research showing how light receptors in the eye signal non-visual parts of the brain affecting human health. Participants will identify the many physiological effects in the brain caused by both light and dark. Participants will be able to connect these light and health concepts to architectural lighting and new design approaches. The component architecture of LED luminaires, however, creates new selection criteria.
