Solar Energy Services, Inc. Commercial Solar Photovoltaic Project Summaries

Brookings Institution (Completed December 2016) Location: Washington DC Customer: Brookings Interconnect Utility: Pepco Solar Energy Services was contracted by Brookings to design and install a solar system for their two adjacent buildings located at 1755 & 1775 Massachusetts Ave NW in Washington DC. The combined system capacity of this grid tied system is kw DC. Each building is individually metered so each have their own respective net-metered 39.96kW and 23.49kW systems. Both buildings have a flat roof, typical of many commercial buildings in the District. These require a low or no penetration racking system as water build-up is common on areas that have no slope. For this application, SES utilized a ballast mounted system where the weight of the modules and racking, along with concrete ballast blocks ensure adequate attachment, as well as wind uplift/snow loading in accordance with local design requirements. Aside from some HVAC equipment and other minor obstructions to design around, the roof areas themselves had good solar accessibility both in terms of module placement and lack of shading. SES currently provides monitoring and O&M services to Brookings.

Matthews Memorial Baptist Church (Completed September 2017) Location: Washington DC, SE Customer: Together Solar Interconnect Utility: Pepco Solar Energy Services was contracted to Engineer, Procure and Construct this 184 kw netmetered system for a solar project developer. Through a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the project developer, this system provides discounted energy to this house of worship. The solar energy agreement reduces energy costs for the entire congregation. SES actively monitors this system and provides ongoing Operations & Maintenance to maximize performance for all of the stakeholders.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation (Completed February 2016) Location: Annapolis, MD Customer: Chesapeake Bay Foundation Interconnect Utility: BGE The Chesapeake Bay Foundation approached Solar Energy Services about their interest in a gridtied solar project that could offset a substantial portion of the electric load for CBF s Philip W. Merrill Center, located on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay in the Bay Ridge section of Annapolis. SES designed, engineered and constructed a unique 110 kw solar system that offsets more than 30% of the annual load of the CBF headquarters building. SES worked with CBF management to consider all options including ground mounts, car ports and roof mounts. After significant evaluation, it was determined that roof mounting was the best solution due to various budget, grant, and environmental constraints. SES proceeded to model the solution with counter-pitched panels on the two available north-facing rooftops in comparison with two larger, flush-mounted arrays that were not counterpitched. Additionally, in response to some shading requirements needed on the large south facing office windows, SES proposed to design a super structure to support three rows of south facing solar panels that would provide much needed seasonal shade to the occupants.

Rehoboth Baptist Church (Completed February 2018) Location: Washington DC, SE Customer: Together Solar Interconnect Utility: Pepco Solar Energy Services was contracted to Engineer, Procure and Construct this 137 kw netmetered system for a solar project developer. This system presented some unique challenges, including attaching to a slate roof and building the project while the building was in use daily by a day care operation. The system provides discounted energy to this house of worship, reducing energy costs for the entire congregation. SES actively monitors this system and provides ongoing Operations & Maintenance to maximize performance for all stakeholders.

Anne Arundel County Fire Department Headquarters (Completed October 2015) Location: Millersville, MD Customer: Anne Arundel County, MD Interconnect Utility: BGE Solar Energy Services was awarded a competitive bid for a design build project for solar for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. SES pricing was well below the project budget, allowing the contract administrator to leverage the additional funds for other solar projects. SES worked with the county and the contract administrator to design and build three additional solar systems for heating water at three of the county fire stations. The project was a major success, delivering the AA County fire department improved operating budgets at four separate facilities.

Kedus Gabriel Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church (Completed June 2017) Location: Washington DC, NE Customer: Together Solar Interconnect Utility: Pepco Solar Energy Services was contracted to Engineer, Procure and Construct this 141 kw netmetered system for a solar project developer. Through a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the project developer, this system provides discounted energy to this house of worship. The solar energy agreement reduces energy costs for the entire congregation. SES actively monitors this system and provides ongoing Operations & Maintenance to maximize performance for all stakeholders.

Furbish Building (Completed December 2017) Location: Baltimore, MD Customer: The Furbish Company Interconnect Utility: BGE SES was engaged by this customer to design, engineer and install a solar system for this historic building overlooking the Baltimore Harbor. SES utilized a low profile ballasted racking system to mitigate wind loading and avoid any roof penetrations. The Solar Edge inverter system allows for maximum performance from individual panels, mitigating the modest shading from some roof obstructions. This grid-tied 45 kw system was designed as two separate systems to divide the solar production between two of the building s utility meters, maximizing the return on the customer s roof space.

Cole Field House Photovoltaic (Completed November 2009) Location: College Park, MD Customer: Johnson Controls Incorporated Interconnect Utility: Pepco Solar Energy Services was contracted by Johnson Controls to install a grid-tied, ballast-mounted, solar photovoltaic system on Cole Field House at the University of Maryland, College Park campus. The system was interconnected to the building electrical system (3 Phase 208 VAC) by the SES electrician and now serves as both a renewable energy generation facility as well as an educational tool for University students.

United States Department of Agriculture (Completed 2015) Location: Beltsville, MD Customer: Amber Enterprises Interconnect Utility: PEPCO Solar Energy Services was contracted by Amber Contracting to install and test the DC wiring and all grounding for this 4750 panel (1.5MW) ground mounted solar PV system. This project is currently more than half completed as of March 2015 and can be seen from the DC Beltway.

Obligation Farm (Completed November 2014) Location: Harwood, MD Customer: Chris and Betty Wilson Interconnect Utility: BGE Solar Energy Services designed and installed a 47.6 kw grid-tied solar PV system for this agricultural property. The system was mounted on the South facing roof of a riding arena. The solar array consists of (156) roof mounted Conergy 305W panels and (4) Fronius IG kw inverters. SES worked with customer and the electric utility to provide for required utility transformer upgrades to accommodate the system.

Salernos Restaurant and Catering (Completed Feb 2015) Location: Sykesville, MD Customer: Bruce Reamer Interconnect Utility: BGE

Solar Energy Services was contracted by Salernos restaurant and catering to maximize their solar return on investment. Due to the significant and regular water heating demands of the operation, SES began with the high efficiency solar thermal technology to offset as much water heating as possible on the restaurant. Next, the SES design maximized all other available and eligible roof space with the installation of a grid-tied 17 kw PV system utilizing WINAICO 260 Watt panels and Solar Edge inverters and optimizers. Salernos has established as reputation as a leader for environmental stewardship in the restaurant industry with intense recycling, composting, and other sustainable technologies. Now they are able to promote their solar investments while educating their clientele on solar PV and Solar Thermal energies.
