The result is an envelope that is insulated 70% better than the code baseline and is built to a higher construction standard to reduce heat loss, a high-efficiency mini-split mechanical system, and reduced energy use for lighting and plug loads. This building performs 60% better than the baseline, and has a HERS index of 43. Heating loads are dramatically reduced over conventional code construction. The primary energy uses in the building is occupant driven loads lighting and plug loads Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec kwh Demand The chart above shows the annual energy production potential for the townhomes for a roof top photovoltaic array (left), and a comparison of monthly production and demand (right). The blue area on the pie chart shows the annual production relative to total load, which shows that 79% of the annual energy load can be met on site. Actual experience will differ from these calculations due to variations such as occupancy, building operation and maintenance, weather, energy use not covered by this procedure, changes in energy rates between design of the building and occupancy, and the precision of the calculation tool. Modeled using IES Virtual Environment Energy production assumes a ptiched roof with 50% of the tool roof area dedicated to PV panels.
