1 16 Otsego Lake: Analyses of Water for Hydrocarbons, Summer M. F. Albright W. N. Harman INTRODUCTION In 1994, Goldberg (1996) developed and carried out a protocol for the collection of water samples for herbicide and hydrocarbon analyses of Otsego lake water. The purposes of the collections were'to: 1. Collect water nearer potential sources of herbicides and hydrocarbons rather than at the Cooperstown Village water intake, where quarterly analyses of these sorts are routinely undertaken. 2. Take a series of samples for hydrocarbon analysis early enough in the spring so that conditions could be considered free from the impact of power boats; followed by another in late summer, immediately after intensive boat activity, to ascertain if the concentrations of pollutants correlate with power boat utilization. 3. In the spring after a precipitation event, to collect a series of herbicide samples for analysis near probable use sites to ascertain conditions under a worst case scenario for their introduction into Otsego Lake. Friend Laboratory, Inc. (FLI), 1 Research Circle, Waverly, NY 14892, was chosen to analyze the water samples. The laboratory is certified by the NYS Dept. of Health for these analyses. It is also used to regularly test the potable water for the Village of Cooperstown. FLI supplied the BFS with approved sample containers, appropriate preservatives, and instructions for following protocols for collecting and shipping water samples for analyses (Goldberg, 1996). The 1994 analyses saw no evidence of herbicides or the heavier petroleum compounds (oils, gasoline, etc.) Traces of volatiles (benzene, toluene, xylene) were noted at several locations (Goldberg, 1996). During the present study no collections were made to evaluate herbicides. The numbers of samples collected for hydrocarbon analysis were increased in order to better ascertain inputs from streams tributary to the Lake, coordinated with water quality and biological monitoring of those streams (Heavey, 1996; Fahey, 1996; Miller, 1996; Cole, 1996).

3 18 METHODS Samples were gathered on 8 July 95. Sample sites are illustrated in Figure 1. Mid-lake and tributary mouths were sampled at 1 m from the surface, or at mid-depth in the water column if the depth was less than 1 m, using a Van Dorn water sampler. Tributary waters less than 0.25 m in depth were sampled sub-surface with all beaker. Samples were placed immediately into containers provided by Friend Laboratories containing the appropriate preservat i ves, iced, and transported to \Naverly, NY, within 24 hours (9 July 95). The locations of samples sites were as follows: Marina HH1 - Otsego Lake, mouth of Hayden Creek HH2 - Otsego Lake, mouth of Shadow Brook HH3 - Otsego Lake, mid-lake (TR-4C) HH4 - Otsego Lake, Village boat launch HH5 - Otsego Lake, mouth of Willow Brook HH6 - Otsego Lake, Sam Smith's Marina HH7 - Otsego lake, mouth of Cripple Creek HH8 - Hayden Cree k, Rt. 53 bridge HH9 - Shadow Brook, Mill Road bridge HH10 - Willow Brook, Lake Street bridge HH11 Leatherstocking Creek, driveway, HH12 - Cripple Cree k, below Clarke Pond Sam Smith's The following tests were requested from FLI: 1. GCFI D (310.13) which scans for heavier petroleum compounds (fuel oil, gasoline, mineral spirits, kerosene types 2, 4, 6 and motor oil). The water for this test was collected in one liter (1 1) clear glass bottles. 2. BTEX scans for volatiles (Benzene, Toluene, p-xylene, m Xylene, o-xylene, Ethylbenzene, and the gasoline additive MTBE). This test also scans for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH). The water for this test was collected in 40 milliter (ml) clear vials. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Results are presented in Table 1. No gasoline, motor oil, kerosene, or fuel oil were detected at any site. No BTEX compounds; benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, p-xylene/m-xylene, or 0 xylene were detected at any site.
