1 Technical Data Sheet Formasil* 45 Silicone Emulsion DESCRIPTION Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion is an extremely stable, water-thin emulsion of methyl silicone oil that is replacing organic oils as a spray lubricant in the glasscontainer industry. It is being used successfully for the lubrication of all types of delivery equipment as well as for spraying the blank moulds of glass-forming machinery. KEY PERFORMANCE PROPERTIES Applies a hydrophibic release film on substrates. Excellent lubrification properties. Easily water dilutable. Easy handling due to low viscosity. Effective on low dosage levels. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Test Unit Property Physical Form - Liquid, Oil-in-water Appearance - Milky white Silicone Content Weight-% 35 Gravity 20 C g/cm³ 0.96 Typical product data values should not be used as specifications. Assistance and specifications are available by contacting Momentive Performance Materials. Table 1: Formasil 45 is supplied as a 35 weight -% emulsion to be diluted with water. Slight paddle stirring is sufficient to effect complete dispersion of the concentrated emulsion. In areas where the tap water is corrosive because of excessive mineral content, 1/20 per cent of sodium nitrite may be added as a rust inhibitor. To prepare a batch of 100-to-1 dilution Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion for example, fill a clean 200L drum with 182 litres of water. Add 1.5 litres of Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion and stir. If local tap water mineral conditions require a rust inhibitor, mix 85 grammes of sodium nitrite in half a litre of the dilute water. Mix this concentrated aqueous solution into the 200L drum of diluted emulsion. As a good starting point, use the 100-to-1 dilution. From this beginning, vary the dilution to satisfy individual needs. The amount of silicone dilution varies widely in actual practice. So many factors are involved that it is not possible to make predictions that can apply in a general way. Typically, Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion diluted 220:1 is being used to lubricate the scoops, chutes, and deflectors of Hartford Empire IS machines. Water The purity of the water supply can affect build-up on shears and delivery equipment. Neither the total hardness nor total solids should exceed 220 ppm for best results. However, there are instances where harder water has been used successfully. Whether a given water supply can be used successfully should be determined by trial. In cases where local water supplies cause build-up, use of demineralised water is suggested. Zeolite-treated or softened water is not satisfactory, because the solids content is not decreased. Distilled water is satisfactory, but is usually more expensive than demineralising water. Page 1 of 5

2 Steel and Cast Iron Delivery Equipment To date, both cast iron and steel delivery equipment have been lubricated satisfactorily. In both cases, it is good practice to swab new equipment with undiluted Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion before placing it in service. Spray and Supply Systems Many glass-container companies have found existing spray apparatus entirely adequate for using Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion to spray the delivery equipment of glass-forming machines. Others have found slight modifications desirable to take full advantage of the greater cooling capacity and other improvements that result from using Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion. For blank moulds, a special spray system is usually designed. Separate central supply systems are recommended for the delivery and shear spray. An ideal location for the main supply tanks is in the basement. For here, the dilute silicone can be pumped to a manifold system on the machine level. This arrangement permits preparation and storage of dilute emulsion in a cool place. The dilute emulsion is very stable and can be piped near furnaces, steam pipes, and the glass machine without breaking down or coagulating. However, bulk storage of dilute emulsion is not recommended where the ambient temperature exceeds 50 C. General Advantages 1. Cost Reduction a) Equipment cleaning Because use of Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion eliminates most of the smoke, soot, and oil vapors, the man-hours spent daily wiping soot from machinery is cut to a minimum. The need for covering floors with sawdust to absorb excess oil is reduced. b) Mould Cleaning - The use of Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion greatly reduces mould cleaning. Any deposit from the diluted emulsion is more easily cleaned, thus reducing mould-cleaning cost. A minimum build-up on the moulds means less loss of output due to failure to meet tolerances. 2. Per Cent Pack and Production Increase The use of Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion has reduced rejects and increased per cent pack from 90 per cent up to better than 95 per cent. Increased machine speeds, with up to 10 per cent more bottles per minute, have also been observed. 3. Reduction in Fire Hazard The reduction that can be made in fire hazard is obvious in glass plants still using the organic oils. Oil condensate continuously collecting on the catwalks, beams, sheathing, and machinery catches fire easily. Flash fires in the mould are common. Not only will the use of silicone oil reduce this fire hazard, but eventually the use of silicones should help to reduce the fire insurance rates, directly dependent on the statistical index of fire hazard. 4. Smoke Reduction When Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion is sprayed on the delivery equipment and blank mould on glass-forming machinery, the water in dilute solution passes off as water vapour. Smoke, soot, and oil vapours are eliminated. The need for swabbing is greatly reduced. The silicone leaves a minimum of residue. Page 2 of 5

3 5. Ware Appearance Improvement Use of Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion reports that glassware is cleaner than that produced when using organic Lubricants. No carbon specks or other surface contamination is found. 6. Tap water Dilution Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion can be diluted with ordinary tap water in most cases, simply by stirring. 7. Storage Simplification Since Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion is diluted for use with 60 to 200 parts of water to one part of Formasil 45, a large reserve supply requires only a small storage space. Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion is nonflammable. This, together with the extraordinary stability of Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion, eliminates the problem of providing a special storage area. SAFETY Shelf Life The outstanding characteristic of Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion is its stability. This assures the user of the following practical benefits: 1. Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion does not deteriorate on storage at extremes of ambient temperatures; it is not harmed by repeated freezing and thawing. Even as a dilute emulsion, Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion can withstand several days storage at temperatures up to 80 C without creaming or breaking. 2. There is no pressure buildup nor putrefaction of material in the drums on storage. 3. There is no problem of breaking or separating on dilution. 4. Formasil 45 Silicone Emulsion shows complete stability to aeration, such as might occur in pumping. 5. Nothing settles in mixing tanks or clogs spray equipment 6. A uniform product can be expected for application at all times. Page 3 of 5

4 SAFETY Toxicological Properties Dimethyl silicone oil has an extremely low order of toxicity. Laboratory experiments have shown that when it is administered by mouth to rats, 50 milliliters per kilogram body weight does not prove fatal. This is quantitatively less toxic to the rat than lard administered in a single massive dose. When tested upon the skin of rabbits, it does not penetrate the skin of rabbits, it does not penetrate the skin, nor is it a skin irritant. It caused no injury to rabbit s eyes. Rats exposed to saturated vapors for eight hours were not killed. Dimethyl silicone oil is considered safe in normal industrial uses. However, if it is to be used in foods, drugs and cosmetic certain statutory regulations, like the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, must be considered.
