Is the offshore wind power in Finland? A N N I M I K K O N E N A N N I. M I K K O N E F W P A. F I

Content 1. Current status of wind power in Finland 2. Current status of offshore wind power in Finland 3. Update on the Tahkoluoto demo-project 4. The future of offshore wind power in Finland

Electricity supply by energy sources 2016 (66,1 TWh) Coal Oil Natural gas Hydro power Renewables 45 % CO2-neutral 78 % Wind power Domestic: 50 % Nuclear Peat + 22,3 % imports of the consumption (85,1 TWh) Biomass Waste

Investments to wind power have been growing Cumulative investments, Capacity and no of WTGs (arvio) (estimate) Cumulative investments (millon, estimate) Cumulative capacity (MW) Cumulative no of WTG o WP share in total electricity consumption: o 2011, ~ 0,5 % o 2014, 1,3 % o 2015, 2,8 % o 2016, 3,6 % o Cumulative WP capacity: o 2013: 446 MW o 2014: 627 MW o 2015: 1005 MW o 2016: 1533 MW

Energy attitudes study: What energy production Mihin suuntaan sähköntuotantoamme pitäisi kehittää should Kaikki vastaajat, Finland n=1000 have more, what less? n=1000 Lisätä Add Sopiva Enough Eos Don t know Vähentää Reduce Net value is calculated by reducing needs to be reduced %-share of needs to be added %-share Netto Aurinkosähkö Solar Wind Tuulivoima Puu- ja muu Bioenergy bioenergia Hydro Vesivoima Natural Maakaasu gas Nuclear Ydinvoima Peat Turve Sähkön tuonti Ïmports ulkomailta Oil Öljy Coal Kivihiili % Suomalaisten energia-asenteet

Renewable energy targets for 2020 and target: 38 % of energy consumption covered with renewables by 2020 Target was reached already in Approximately 40 % of the energy consumption was covered with renewables in Current feed-in-tariff for wind power fully booked. The rest of the 2500 MVA will be constructed by 2017 beginning of Energy and Climate strategy, updated on November 2016: 50 % of the energy consumption has to be covered with renewable energy by % of energy consumption covered with domestic energy sources by % renewable energy system in 2050?

2. Current status of offshore wind power in Finland One offshore turbine 2,3 MW Siemens Installed in 2010 Hub-height 80 m Average annual production 9,36 GWh, Capacity factor 0,46 Distance from shore 1,2 km Water depth 9 m Owner: Suomen Hyötytuuli Demonstration project 10 Siemens 4 MW turbines Hub-height 90 m Investments: 120 million Owner: Suomen Hyötytuuli Source: Suomen Hyötytuuli, + TEM

3. Update on Tahkoluoto demo-project Source: Suomen Hyötytuuli,

4. The future of offshore wind power in Finland I 2 TWh of annual renewable electricity production will be auctioned between The details of the system are yet to be designed Closer to 2020 it will be evaluated, if the auctions will be continued Offshore cannot beat onshore wind The financial support for the demo project is 20 million + current feed-in-tariff (83,5 /MWh for 12 years) The LCOE can be estimated better after the Tahkoluoto project is in production Estimated LCOE of different renewable electricity production methods in Finland in 2015 (source: Pöyry, 2016)

4. The future of offshore wind power in Finland II There is a quite a large offshore project pipeline in Finland 11 project, total capacity 1800 MW MW 6 project developers The single offshore turbine has already demonstrated that the turbine can survive and operate well in the frozen sea. the capacity factor is remarkable higher than in onshore turbines even though the distance from the shore is modest. Currently no new support mechanism for offshore planned. Auctioning of another demonstration project? What developers and value chain really need is continuation of the support mechanism: several rounds of auctions! Only this will guarantee the supply chain and cut of costs Best option the co-operation in the Baltic sea region?
