3 3 We re full of energy. For over a decade, h-tec has been building a worldwide reputation as the leading provider of educational fuel cell products. Today, we are proud of our commitment to educating the next generation of fuel cell researchers, and we are working with the current generation to develop fuel cell technology for commercial use. We believe that in the years to come, hydrogen energy systems will be crucial to solving the world s energy supply problems. Therefore, it is absolutely essential that the students of today learn about how hydrogen fuel cell technology works, and how it can be applied in the real world. But teaching the next generation isn t enough; we also have to learn from them. That is why we sponsor student competitions in Germany - to unlock the power of student creativity and see how bright young minds can apply fuel cell technology to real-world problems. In the coming years, we will continue to ex- pand our educational offerings and sponsored competitions, as well as diversify our product line to include commercial grade fuel cells and electrolysers for use in schools, offi ces and homes. We look forward to a future of clean, renewable energy - a future powered by hydrogen. 4 4 Fuel Cell Technology CATHODE ANODE O 2 2H 2 2H 2 O 4H + + 4e- + O 2 2H 2 O 2H 2 4H + + 4e- 4e- 4eolymer Electrolyte Membrane PEM = Polymer Electrolyte Membrane The Hydrogen Energy Cycle A fuel cell reaction is the exact reverse of the electrolysis of water. This means that when electrical energy splits apart water to produce hydrogen and oxygen gases, it essentially stores much of that electrical energy as chemical energy in the form of the gases themselves. A fuel cell can convert this stored chemical energy directly back into electrical energy. Hydrogen and oxygen are fed into the fuel cell and react to form water, producing electricity and heat in the process. This cycle means that hydrogen and oxygen can be used as energy storage mediums. Intermittent, renewable power supplies like solar and wind can be used to create hydrogen, which can be stored and converted back to electrical energy anytime it is needed. A clean solution, indeed. h-tec-catalog-2011.indd h-tec Wasserstoff-Energie-Systeme GmbH Lindenstrasse 48a Luebeck / Germany Phone: +49 (0) Fax: +49 (0) info@h-tec.com website: To see our complete product range and get further details on our company, please visit our website:. 10 10 TUTORIAL PRODUCT RANGE Experiments with fuel cell technology. The Tutorial range emphasizes modular fl exibility: each component has a magnetic base and can be assembled horizontally on the included base plate or vehicle chassis, or vertically on any magnetic surface (e.g. a classroom whiteboard). All the sets in this range include fuel cells or reversible fuel cells which allow either H 2 /O 2 or H 2 /Air operation. The Tutorial range includes economical starter sets like the HyRunner, which features a reversible fuel cell that can perform both the electrolyser and fuel cell functions of the solar hydrogen cycle. Our solar wind turbine set is a new addition to the Tutorial range. It can be paired with the PEM electrolyser cells in the JuniorSet and Tutorial sets to allow a number of experiments in the realm of renewable energy. Wind turbines and solar panels are renewable energy generators that can provide consumers with electricity. But they can only produce electricity when the wind is blowing or the sun is shining. However, if you use them to power a PEM electrolyser, you get hydrogen that can be stored and used in a fuel cell to generate electricity whenever it is needed. The result is energy around the clock. Another new member of the Tutorial family is the HySpeedster Hybrid. This kit allows students to explore the world of e-mobility. The fuel cell provides energy to drive the vehicle, and the capacitor provides an energy buffer. With the capacitor, excess energy from the fuel cell can be stored and released to extend range, boost power or smooth out driving operation. The vehicle has three different gear ratios for better performance in a variety of driving conditions. h-tec s fuel cell textbook is included with each product. It contains information about the technology and instructions for a variety of experiments. 16 16 TUTORIAL PRODUCT RANGE Solar Wind Set Extension for the Tutorial and Junior experimentation ti sets Fully functional wind generator runs with table fans Different number of blades possible Solar panel for additional experiments Easy set-up Solar Wind Set Item A164 Recommended grades: 5-12 Subjects: Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering/ Circuits, Renewable Energy Application uses: Classroom Instruction, Handson Learning Wind turbine on a stand, Solar Module Tutorial, Experimentation Plate Large, teaching material and accessories in a carrying case. The Solar Wind Set allows a number of experiments in the realm of renewable energy and is optimized to work with the PEM electrolyser cells of the JuniorSet, Tutorial Student Set and the Tutorial Teacher Set. Wind turbines and solar panels are renewable energy generators that can provide consumers with electricity. But they can only produce electricity ectricity when the wind is blowing or the sun is shining. By pairing a wind turbine with a PEM electrolyser, it is possible to generate and store environmentally-friendly hydrogen for later use. A fuel cell can convert this hydrogen back to electricity whenever it is needed, resulting in energy around the clock. The hub of the model turbine is designed to accept different numbers of blades: from two up to six. The blades are fully adjustable. Mounting ng bar, six blades, additional solar module and experimentation plate for extended solar experiments included. This model was designed specifi cally for extended, unsupervised operation. Its striking appearance immediately draws visitors in. A solar module provides electricity to run the model s PEM electrolyser. Viewers can watch the reactions taking place inside the transparent cells, observe the gases being created, and marvel at how the energy is stored - in elegant columns of water encased in acrylic glass. The stored gas is then used to power a fuel cell, which converts the two gases back into water, generating heat and electricity, which in turn powers an electric load. Altogether, this model gives a fascinating self-contained show. 26 26 FUEL CELLS & ELECTROLYSERS Fuel Cell Technology à la carte. Fuel Cells and Electrolysers We always recommend that our teaching customers choose from one of our sets, which are carefully designed to provide all the necessary components for a variety of experiments at every level. However, we realize that experienced customers may have a need for different combinations of our equipment. Therefore, all of our fuel cells are available for sale separately, so you can add to a set, create your own, or power your own energy project. Individual cells are available from the most basic models to the Quattro, our most powerful fuel cell. If you need even more power or more fl exibility, choose a stack, which allows you to tailor the power output to match the needs of your experiment. If you re interested in hydrogen generation, we also offer electrolysers up to 50 W (230 cm 3 /min), which can supply plenty of hydrogen for lab use, experiments, fuel cell tests, etc. Fuel cells and stacks Electrolysers h-tec-catalog-2011.indd h-tec Wasserstoff-Energie-Systeme GmbH Lindenstrasse 48a Luebeck / Germany Phone: +49 (0) Fax: +49 (0) info@h-tec.com website: To see our complete product range and get further details on our company, please visit our website:.
