PHBV production in China, an industrialization of bio-based and biodegradable plastics Oct 13-15, Hangzhou Xuejun Chen Tianan biological material Co., ltd, Ningbo, China 1

Bio-based and biodegradable Why? 2

Why? Oil resources are running low and scarce Global carbon cycle is being destroyed Environment is polluted and that is an understatement. 3

Global carbon cycle CO 2 Biomass / Bio-organics >10 6 years 1-10 years Polymers Chemicals fuels Chemical industry Fossil Resources petroleum, natural gas Courtesy of Prof. NARAYAN chenxj@tianan-enmat.com 4

The eco driver Renewable Carbon CO 2 & biomass New biochemical industry Green polymers & chemicals chenxj@tianan-enmat.com 5

Ways to overcome the problem Reduce the use of oil resources Use available and renewable resources Use bio-based materials, widely Reclaimed system, utilize repeatedly Set new scientific standard systems 6

Important, if not crucial The support of your governing organizations. A clear governmental implication in environmentally friendly issues. chenxj@tianan-enmat.com 7

Some have been working on it Who? NatureWorks, BASF, Novamont, Rodendburg, BIOMER, Dupont, Metabolix, SHOWA Highpolymer, MITSUI Chemicals, Mitsubishi GAS Chemicals. What? PLA, ECOFLEX, PCL, PHA, PBS, Mater-Bi, BIOMAX, Thermal-starch, 8

Why did we bring out PHBV? For its characteristics 9

PHBV characteristics Fully bio-based with abundant starch resources in China, it is also Fully biodegradable in standurd composting conditions in half year. We mean 100% biodegradable. It can endure temperatures up to 140 o centigrade. Biological compatibility. It proves to be a stronger and more powerful barrier to any outside influence than other bioplastics. chenxj@tianan-enmat.com 10

Main PHA researching units at present: American: Metabolix, small scale, (planed to up) P&G, middle scale, (stoped?) Brazil : PHB INDUSTRIAL S/A company, about 50 ton/year Japanese : Mitsubishi GAS Chemicals, about 10 ton/year Germany: BIOMER, small scale, Netherlands: Agrotechnology & Food Innovations, small scale,..etc chenxj@tianan-enmat.com 11

Figures about Tianan The production capacity of PHBV is of 1000 tons per annum and will shortly be substantially increased. Tianan is ISO certified. Tianan is supported by the National Innovation Fund of China. Listed into the HI-TECH Research and Development Program of CHINA (863 program) 13
