- 1 - Marine Biogas Renewable energy from a clean ocean Company presentation

The world is facing several key challenges 1 Climate change and peak oil 2 Competition for agricultural land to feed a growing population 3 Eutrophication caused by high nutrient emissions (e.g. fertilizers) 2

Austria Austria Belgium Belgium Bulgaria Bulgaria Croatia Croatia Cyprus Cyprus Czech Czech Republic Republic Denmark Denmark Estonia Estonia Finland Finland France France Germany Germany Greece Greece Hungary Hungary Ireland Ireland Italy Italy Latvia Latvia Lithuania Lithuania Luxembourg Luxembourg Netherlands The Netherlands Poland Poland Portugal Portugal Romania Romania Slovakia Slovakia Slovenia Slovenia Spain Spain Sweden Sweden Switzerland Switzerland UK UK High biogas targets have been set but new sources of substrates are needed to fulfill targets Biogas production and NREAP s goals in 2020 For electricity, heating & cooling, and transport (GWh / year) Biogas production 2012 NREAP 2020 Biogas production targets Ambitious EU targets for biogas production until 2020 Significant gap between today s volumes and targets* for 2020 Swedish targets for 2020: 3 TWh (0,3 TWh today) for Skåne Regional Council 2,4 TWh (0,26 TWh) for Västra Götaland Regional Council New sources of substrates are needed to meet the national biogas targets *introduced in the National Renewable Energy Action Plans (NREAP) Source: European Biogas Association (Biogas Report 2013) National target for Sweden does not exist. However, regional targets of at least 5,4 TWh have been set by regional councils Production data for 2012 not available for Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Spain 3

The solution: Ciona intestinalis (sea squirts*) About Ciona intestinalis Filters large amounts of water to capture plankton algae and bacteria Found on all continents except Antarctica Rapid growth (~20 mm/month) and reproduction (> eggs per individual) Can be cultured in large scale Readily digested to biogas in traditional fermenters Provides good eco-fertilizer * Sv. Sjöpung 4

The Marin Biogas history Patent granted Marin biogas founded by Fredrik Norén First deployment of cultivation rigs in Lysekil and Ljungskile Pre-study founded by Energimyndigheten Large scale demonstration project ( ) SEK 3 million granted from the Marine Environment Facility (EPA) study environmental effects and to verify nutrient uptake Final report Ecological effects of ascidian cultivation Accepted as innovation project by KIC InnoEnergy Commercialization 10

Marine biomass has high biogas yield and nitrogen removal and does not compete with food production Competitive advantage High biogas yield High nitrogen removal Competitive cost No rural land needed MWh / hectare ton / hectare Production cost (SEK/MWh) ,14-0, Ciona Corn Forage Ciona Corn Forage Ciona Corn Forage No need for expensive rural land or competition with food production 11

There exist a significant potential for cultivation for Ciona for biogas production The potential Fully utilized sheltered waters on Swedish West Coast with proven technology: 1,9 TWh / year (30 km 2 ) Off-shore Needs development of culture/harvesting system Very large potential Can be combined with other marine energy harvesting technologies Wind farms Only 30 km 2 would be needed to generate 1,9 TWh / year This is more than the total Swedish biogas production (1,7 TWh) Wave farms 12

A demonstration project to verify the concept will be performed Why Scale up and verify the business opportunity of using ascidians for biogas production Develop the concept When What Demonstration project scope 1 hectare ascidian cultivation on the Swedish west coast Use of improved farming methods based on currently available technology for mussel farming Partners Marin Biogas AB Scanfjord Mollösund AB E.ON Biofor Sverige AB Swedish Environmental Research Institute DTU Aqua Engage Key Technology Ventures AG Budget Total project cost: 2,47 MEUR Project financed by KIC InnoEnergy (55 %) and Swedish Energy Agency (45 %) 13

The Demonstration Project Project purpose: Project budget Cultivation site Scale up and verify the concept Develop the concept Time frame ,5 MEUR Kic InnoEnergy Swedish Energy Agency Djupvik, Tjörn A European partner consortium: 1 hectare ascidian cultivation generates 650 MWh / year, enough for......driving a car 35x laps around the earth or......cover the annual energy demand for 26 villas 1 hectare ( 20 m depth ) yields ton ascidians per year, removing: 26 TONS 2,3 TONS 7 N Nitrogen 15 P Phosphorus 14

Three main areas will be developed in the project to further strengthen the concept 1 To enable large scale production rigs farther away from the coastline Off-shore cultivation Potential conflicts with stakeholders near the shore reduced Proven successful for mussel cultivation 2 Mediated settling and strain selection Could open up potential for cultivation in water with lower salinity Population of this species in the Kiel Bay Specimens from Kiel Bay and Danish Straits used for strain selection 3 Harvesting & dewatering technology Optimize cultivation and harvesting technology Commonly available long-line technology for mussel farms used today Will improve the efficiency and lower the cost 15
