Towards a research agenda for nature-based solutions Definition Nature-based solutions to societal challenges are solutions that are inspired and supported by nature, which are cost-effective, simultaneously provide environmental, social and economic benefits and help build resilience. 3 NBS roadmap TARGETS 1. Enhance the framework conditions for nature-based solutions at EU policy level. 2. Develop a European community of innovators. 3. Provide the evidence and knowledge base for naturebased solutions. 4. Advance the development, uptake and upscale of innovative nature-based solutions. 5. Mainstream nature-based solutions within the international R&I agenda.

The overall approach for a new EU Research and policy agenda Proof of concept Demonstration initiatives solution testing Innovative Naturebased solutions Public and private sector engagement

EU R&I policy agenda underway to provide the evidence and arguments for NBS 1- Mapping and networking of existing initiatives on Nature-Based Solutions in Europe and beyond 2-Set-up of large scale demonstration projects on the effectiveness, applicability and replicability of Nature-Based Solutions Proof of concept Innovative Naturebased solutions Demonstration initiatives solution testing Public and private sector engagement 3-Launch and test of new means of collaboration, financing and governance (public private partnerships, innovative financing, business and organisational models, innovative public procurement, social innovation etc.) 4- Establishment of a dialogue platform for diverse stakeholders 5- Collaboration within Europe and internationally, through Horizon 2020 the EU Framework Programme for Research &

Call description SC : Large-scale demonstrators on nature-based solutions for hydro-meteorological risk reduction Specific Challenge Economic damage costs from extreme hydro-meteorological events (such as floods, droughts, storm surges, landslides) are increasing throughout Europe. Further investment in traditional, engineering solutions for risk prevention is no longer possible in several cases, due to the very high costs, and to the limited flexibility offered by such solutions to cope with extreme events for which changes in frequency, intensity and distribution may be expected due to climate change. Nature-based solutions can be flexible, multi-beneficial alternatives to traditional engineering, but adequate proof-of-concept for their upscaling and replication is lacking.

Call description SC : Large-scale demonstrators on nature-based solutions for hydro-meteorological risk reduction Expected Impact: Develop, demonstrate and deploy innovative systemic nature-based solutions, including green and blue infrastructure and ecosystem-based management approaches, in rural and natural areas, including particularly sensitive ones such as mountainous and coastal areas 1- mainstreaming nature-based solutions in land use planning, landscaping and territorial policies 2- developing an integrated EU-wide evidence base and a European reference framework on nature-based solutions 3- enhancing market demand for nature-based solutions for hydrometeorological risk reduction and climate change adaptation 4- contributing to the implementation of EU policies for cost-effective and flexible disaster risk management

Call description SC : Large-scale demonstrators on nature-based solutions for hydro-meteorological risk reduction Opening dates, deadlines and indicative budget Opening date: 08 Nov 2016 Deadlines for selection: 07 Mar 2017 (First stage) 05 Sep 2017 (Second stage) Budgets for 2017: 25 M for SC More information at: unities/h2020/topics/2188-sc html

Eco-DRR Examples Room for the River, the Netherlands High cost of expanding infrastructure for flood protection Solution: Integrated spatial plan for flood protection (4 million people) Restoration of floodplains Introduction of green elements Ruimte voor de Rivier, 2015 Co-benefits Master landscaping Improvement of environmental quality for people and nature Increase of recreational facilities

Eco-DRR Examples Protective forests, Alps Increased risks & infrastructure damage from landslides & avalanches Foto Furter, Photograph Parsenn, Switzerland, 1945 Peter Bebi, Photograph Parsenn, Switzerland, 2007 Solution: Targeted afforestation of hillslopes Benefits for Switzerland only: between 1.5 to 2.5 billion per year Other co-benefits: Natural capital & landscape enhancement

Eco-DRR Examples Ridge-to-reef approach for building coastal resilience in Port-Salut, Haiti Ecosystem in focus: coastal and marine habitat Target: 90 fishermen, 20 farmers and 300 households Location: Port-Salut municipality, South Department Main hazards targeted: Flooding and storm surge Approach: Promoting sustainable and resilient coastal zone management, through ridge-to-reef, ecosystem based solutions BEFORE AFTER

Key Messages Barriers & needs to full deployment Limited awareness of multi-functionality lock-in in the traditional way of doing things Lack of a solid evidence base to compare and combine with traditional, engineering solutions Timeframes & tipping points for performance Design standards Operational and technical guidelines, robust monitoring tools Need for tools and standards to engineer nature-based solutions Need for innovative decision-making processes involving codesign & co-implementation
