WHEN QUALITY COUNTS, EFFICIENCY ADDS UP. Produce more cost-effective products without sacrificing quality. In an industrial facility, the right high-efficiency upgrades often result in far more than long-term energy savings. A smart investment can also reduce operating costs and waste while boosting productivity, safety, equipment life cycles and ultimately your bottom line. Because there is no one-size-fits-all solution, bring KCP&L to the table early so we can learn about your unique needs and provide resources and incentives to help you make informed buying decisions. Since 2015, KCP&L has awarded over $11 million in incentives to industrial sector customers, helping them save more than 62 million kwh and nearly $5 million in annual energy costs.

SMART SOLUTIONS FOR EVERYDAY EFFICIENCY. 01 Use only what you need Variable speed drive (VSD) air compressors use only as much power as required by precisely matching motor speed to varying airflow requirements. VSD compressors experience less wear and tear, reduced maintenance costs, longer equipment life, greater reliability and decreased noise. They also allow for sequencing controls that can shift loads between multiple compressors and take machines offline when not needed. Pumps, blowers and fans retrofitted with VSDs and controls run up to 50 percent more efficiently than conventional singlespeed models. Even before taking additional benefits like increased comfort and reduced maintenance costs into consideration, the energy savings alone are often enough to bring a speedy return on your investment. A VSD compressor can cut your system s energy use by up to 35 percent.

Modern, right-sized chillers feature energy-saving advancements like magnetic bearings and VSDs to combine everyday comfort with significant longterm savings. The typical lifespan of a chiller is over 30 years, so investing in the right chiller now can pay off for decades to come. Evaluate your replacement options ahead of time so you re not forced into a hasty decision. 02 Customize lighting based on purpose A single workplace injury requiring medical attention costs an average of $42,000. Improve safety with brighter, longer-lasting LEDs. LEDs use far less energy and last years longer than standard options. They also offer exceptional light quality, brightness and versatility, allowing you to get the light just right in each area of your facility. A strategic approach that keeps light levels comfortable in general areas and brighter in task areas for detailed assembly work can significantly lower energy costs while increasing safety, productivity and the quality of your product.

03 Upgrade to high-efficiency refrigeration Compressor speed and sequencing controls will help your compressor operate at nearpeak efficiency over a wide operating range. Floating head pressure control lowers the condensing pressure based on weather conditions, resulting in significant energy savings. Variable speed condenser and evaporator fans can run at reduced speed to maintain target pressures or temperatures during part-load conditions, rather than wasting energy cycling on and off. Intelligent defrost controls optimize defrosting based on frost level indicators, reducing excess heat and load during less humid periods of the year.

04 Achieve more predictable results Production lines can be optimized with monitoring and control systems to decrease water use, raw material needs, production costs and time. Around 80 percent of the total energy used in the manufacturing sector is consumed by manufacturing processes. The production line and supporting systems are a smart place to look for efficiency opportunities. PRO TIP An energy management plan is often the best first step toward a more efficient industrial facility. Bring in an industrial facility expert early to help you prioritize projects, plan for funding and determine if pursuing an ISO certification makes sense for you. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization, ISO provides businesses with an internationally recognized framework to manage and improve their energy performance.

PROJECT SNAPSHOTS Yanfeng USA Automotive Yanfeng worked with KCP&L and their trade ally to upgrade their 330,000-square-foot warehouse in Riverside, Missouri. Yanfeng saved nearly 955,000 kwh by replacing over 1,100 fluorescent high bay lights with LED high bays. They saved another 23,000 kwh in their office spaces by replacing 200 metal halide screw-in bulbs with 116 LEDs. Facility type: Auto interior manufacturer Est. annual kwh savings: 1,110,999 kwh Est. annual kw savings: kw Annual energy cost savings: $81,697 Custom incentive: $104,995 Working with KCP&L was a monumental decision when installing LEDs in our facility. The initial estimate had a two-year payback. After consultation with KCP&L, our payback turned into 0.3 years. This project also improved light quality and productivity, and lowered maintenance requirements. If you are considering equipment or lighting upgrades, I recommend reaching out to KCP&L. Keegan Williams Lean Implementation Specialist, Yanfeng USA Automotive Sioux Chief Sioux Chief teamed up with KCP&L to optimize their production line with eight servo-driven, hydraulic-injection molding machines equipped with on-demand eco-drivers. The new machines automatically adjust speed to only use as much power as needed, saving the facility nearly $30,000 in energy costs each year. Facility type: Plumbing product manufacturer Est. annual kwh savings: 318,508 kwh Est. annual kw savings: kw Annual energy cost savings: $29,772 Custom incentive: $31,851
