4 LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF BIOFUELS Tuesday 5th May 2009, 1-5pm Crowne Plaza St James, London In Association with North Energy Associates Introduction The successful development and production of alternatives to conventional transport fuels is a demanding challenge in a world faced with declining fossil fuel resources and the threat of global climate change. Biofuels are one possible answer to this challenge but they need to achieve real and significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Life cycle assessment is used to determine the mitigation potential of biofuels. This class provides the opportunity to learn about the essential aspects of life cycle assessment, in general, and the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions associated with biofuels, in particular. Who should attend? Government administrators, policy-makers and commercial decision-takers, development teams including engineers, economists, accountants and project managers, non-governmental organisation representatives, policy analysts, journalists, researchers, and life cycle assessment practitioners. Programme Registration and coffee Introduction of Life Cycle Assessment Elements of Life Cycle Assessment Greenhouse Gas Emissions Calculations Issues for Biofuels Afternoon Tea Sources of Results for Biofuels Effect on Results for Biofuels Future Developments Discussion and close of workshop About your workshop leader: Dr. Nigel Mortimer, Director, North Energy Associates Ltd. Nigel Mortimer is a Director of North Energy Associates Ltd and manages a range of consultancy services including life cycle assessment. He was a member of the Royal Society working group on Sustainable Biofuels: Prospects and Challenges and participated in the 2008 Gallagher Review on the indirect effects of biofuels. Currently, he is leading a team within North Energy into the study of greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of advanced biofuels. About North Energy Associates North Energy Associates Ltd is a private consultancy company which specialises in sustainable energy development. The company provides complementary expertise through an experienced team for the inception, development and implementation of projects. Particular skills related to projects associated with the mitigation of global climate change include carbon management, greenhouse gas emissions calculation and life cycle assessment.
