3 ABOUT INDIAN SOCIETY FOR HYDRAULICS (ISH) The Indian Society for Hydraulics (ISH) was set up in 1992 as the technical, educational and non-profitary voluntary national organization to encourage and foster understanding amongst engineers, scientists and other technical personnel engaged in various activities related to hydraulics. With a large investment on developments related to water, energy, transportation and allied fields in the country and considering the importance of the hydraulic research, the role of ISH in bringing together the hydraulic engineering fraternity assumes great importance. The main activities of ISH include publishing Journals and organizing Conferences, Seminars, Workshops and Training courses to disseminate information among engineers, scientists interested in these areas. It s objectives include: To provide information to engineers and scientists working in the area of hydraulics and allied disciplines. To disseminate information to engineers and scientists in the field of hydraulics through seminar/ symposia and short courses. To encourage the members to keep upto date with developments in the country and abroad. To publish a Journal of Hydraulic Engineering containing research/review/papers, notes and also a news letter, twice a year. To liaise with various international societies working in the field of hydraulics such an International Association for Hydraulic Research (IAHR). To accord recognition to outstanding workers in hydraulics through suitable awards. Membership is open to Individuals, Government and Non-Government institutions interested in the fields of Hydraulics & Water Resources, Hydrology, Coastal engineering and related areas. ABOUT CWPRS Central Water & Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune is the premier National Institute offering a wide range of comprehensive R&D services related to water and energy resources development, water borne transportation and allied fields. The solutions offered by the Research Station are based on the investigations from physical and mathematical models, field investigations coupled with desk studies or from a combination of these. The requirements of accurate and reliable instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems for physical model studies and prototype measurements are also met with by in-house developments. CWPRS with an interdisciplinary approach in all its activities thus represents unique services in all areas of water sector. As the Regional Laboratory of ESCAP since 1971, CWPRS has offered its services to a number of projects in the neighborhood as well as countries in the Middle East and Africa. ABOUT GII (Gruppo Italiano di Idraulica Italian Group for Hydraulics) The aim of the GII is to promote and coordinate the development of basic and applied research in the disciplines related to water. Membership is open to all individuals and

4 institutions/companies actively interested in fields related to hydraulics and its practical applications. The Association has currently approximately 800 members. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and hydraulic works, through to ice engineering, hydrology, hydroinformatics and continuing education and training. The Association shall also support national and international co-operation with other water-related organizations on topics that are consistent with the purpose of the Association; the arrangement and the participation in educational programmes; the arrangement of working groups, research agenda, meetings and symposia; the exchange of scientific and academic experience and the dissemination of the results of its activities. The Association accomplishes its goals by a wide variety of member activities including: Bi-annual National conference providing an open forum for the presentation and discussion of important issues, studies, new developments and research, and for the general exchange of news and views. The next conference will be held in Brescia, September Annual meeting on Quality of teaching and research in Hydraulics. The bi-annual award Torricelli to the best young Italian scientist in the field of hydraulic engineering. Objective: Water resources have wide spatial and temporal distribution on earth due to which hydraulics of flow of water and hydrological aspects become much more complex. Due to its multiple benefits and the problems created by its excesses, deficit and quality deterioration, the conservation and management of water resources require special attention specially when the effects of climatic changes are also assuming significant importance. The surface transport and coastal zone management have also attained great importance for the progress and development of a nation. The objective of this workshop is to utilize the proceeds comprehensively for the benefit of the forthcoming water resources and coastal projects and for providing inputs to the prospective researchers through the invited lectures by eminent hydraulics and water resources experts from India and Italy. This workshop will substantially help in integrating the technologies in a global perspective by liaising with International Societies in the field. This Indo-Italian Workshop on hydraulics and management of water resources is also intended to provide stronger scientific links and foster bilateral collaboration in these fields. A strong focus that the governments of both the countries have on the water issue, as well as the vast research community working in this area in India and in Italy, allow to envisage important perspectives for a vibrant joint scientific collaboration on problems which are strategically important for the economic growth of both the countries and for the well being of our people. This workshop aims at providing forum for dissemination of advanced contributions in the field. The Research Personnel, Academicians, Consultants, Professional Engineers and

5 Students engaged in the areas of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Development and Management are invited to attend the workshop and participate in various deliberations. Themes: The workshop is being organized to broadly cover all aspects of hydraulics of flow, water resources development and management and coastal engineering through invited lectures. The eminent experts from the India and Italy in the field of hydraulics and water resources will deliver lectures and the following topics will be covered: Flood Disaster and Mitigation Measures Water Resources Development including Drainage Effects of climate change on the Hydrological Parameters Contaminant Transport in Acquifer Systems Advances in Sediment Transport Theories Advance Modelling Techniques in Dams and Ports Environmental Impact Assessment for Water Resources Projects Application of Remote Sensing for Water Resources Development and Management The Participants are invited to present a scientific contribution in the form of a poster presentation.
